Keyless Entry
The act of putting a key in the lock is disappearing from the past, and a lot of new vehicles now have keyless entry. This means that you can lock the car by pressing an electronic fob or pulling the door handle, meaning that your hands are free and you don't have to look around in your bag for keys.
The system operates by emitting an audio signal that is received by the key fob, which in turn sends a reply signal to the car. The vehicle will then recognise this and either open the doors, or switch on the interior lights (if it is programmed to do that).
Some variations of keyless entry don't use any fobs at all instead, they use an app on a smartphone that can transmit a signal directly to the car. This is often referred to as a digital key or phone-as-key and could be a great way to give other drivers access to the car without needing to pass the keys.
There have been incidents of car thefts using keyless entry systems. Secure-A-Key is an anti-theft device that you can attach to your key fob. This will turn off the battery of the remote control if it's not moved for a period of minutes, making it much less likely to be stolen from the vehicle.

This stops the car from starting due to preventing different actions, such as turning off the ignition coil, injectors or fuel pump.
If the immobilizer is activated you'll see a warning light on the dashboard. This is a serious problem and you'll need to visit a specialist to diagnose the root cause.
Modern keyless entry systems are secured by a variety of sensors, one of which is door handle detectors. This sensor is situated inside the front door and waits for a trigger like the insertion of the key or pressing a button on the tailgate. If the trigger is recognized by the car's control system, it will unlock the doors and begin the engine. The Kodiaq, Superb, Octavia and Enyaq have a similar system known as Area View that uses cameras to display different views of the immediate surroundings on the car's monitor.

The switch contacts are connected to the power supply and then connected to a motor that does the actual winding.
