Item upgrading allows players to enhance their weapons and gear by adding new affixes that boost the base stats of the item or providing additional benefits. To upgrade an item, a player has to have it in their inventory as well as access to the kiln.
Usually, items that have weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base while items with strong bases such as eth titans do not vary much in their stats after being upgraded.
Upgrade components
Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armors trinkets, weapons, and gathering tools. They provide an attribute benefit, or extra effect, while the equipment is in use. They can be purchased from vendors, found as loot gathered by enemies or obtained from missions and chests. Some upgrades additionally have special cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level before you can upgrade.
To upgrade a weapon, armor or other item in the game, the player will have to select it and then click on the Upgrade button on the toolbar. This will display on the right-hand side of the screen a preview that shows the expected upgrade stats as well as the necessary component or materials.

Leveling
The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant changes from previous versions. Gear is now broken down into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a specific number of times before being "leveled out." The upgrade costs increase with each level, however the materials needed do not. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a specific few items and maximize the effect of those items, rather than spreading the cost of upgrades across several pieces.

If an item fails to get to its maximum level, the NPC will give the player the option to transfer it to a different person and then re-infuse the item with an upgrade set that is different. This process takes up to two hours and costs the same amount of materials but will result in lower chances of success.

Rerolling

Prior to this, certain upgrades were given priority affixes, which made them easier to roll. To determine if a product is worth upgrading, players must click the Upgrade button on the screen of their character. The attributes of the item will be displayed, along with any required items. For instance the No-mouth Face will require 1.1K Scrap Materials, 250 Enchanted Dust and 5 Glowing Shards to upgrade. Players can also look up the upgrade requirements for specific items at the Cyrodiil Golden vendor or Leaderboard.
In general, weapons and armor are more valuable when they are fully updated. Upgrades to gold are recommended for weapons with spell/weapon-damage glyphs. This will result in a significant improvement in their performance. Weapons with an upgraded appearance will also benefit from this because its defense will increase as it moves from purple to gold.
