The upgrade of an item allows players to increase the gear score of an item up to 700, and then add a final perk. item upgrading can be upgraded if they're in your inventory and you take them to the kiln.
Certain items are worth upgrading because of their distinctive stats. (For instance, a perfectly rolled breakpoint armor used in melee PvP). Other items, like weapons don't really change after an upgrade and therefore aren't worth the cost.
Weapons

The upgrade template for a weapon displays the new stats that it will gain when upgraded in addition to their relative values. This means that a weapon will gain 3% attack damage if it is upgraded from an 8 attack damage sword to an 11 attack damage sword. However, the 3% doesn't mean that it will hit for 3 fewer times as it is an absolute number.
A weapon can also be rerolled using the green button that has arrows that circle in the menu for items. The item will be rerolled and change its statistics, but not reset the weapon's level or bind it to account status.
Armor
Adding a few upgrades to your armor can make a a huge difference in your capacity to withstand. Certain sets provide massive boosts to poison or curse, fire, and magic resistance, which can make traversing tough areas a breeze. In general, the greater defense your character is, the more value you can get out of each point of health, so it's important to improve your armor as much as possible.
You can upgrade your armor by visiting any of the Great Fairy Fountains. There are four fountains in all each of which requires you to complete a special side quest involving the Stable Trotters musical troupe. Once you've completed the primary side quest and completed the corresponding fountain, you can then speak to any Great Fairy to open up the armor upgrade menu.
Each piece of armor can be upgraded up to three levels, and the amount of material and Rupees required to complete each level will differ. You'll need anywhere between three Red Chuchu jelly and 10 Rupees to upgrade the first armor piece, and anywhere between five Rubies or 10 Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horns to upgrade the next one. The Champion Leathers, for example, can be upgraded to a 5 defense rating, which allows you to remain competitive in frigid conditions with a lot of enemies. The Snowquill Headdress, on the other is able to be upgraded as high as +20 defense to ensure you're able to survive a battle with your comrades.
It's important to note that armor cannot be upgraded in the same way as weapons, so you'll have to concentrate on upgrading it for physical strength if you're a Warrior or Spell Power when you're Mage. Once a potion has been upgraded, it won't degrade until you re-use it, or break the bottle it's stored in. You can also change the name of the potion by clicking it in your inventory.
There were a few changes to potion mechanics in version 1.7.2. For example the splash potions now have a duration of 0:08 (this is not the same as 22.5 seconds shown on the hover display of the item). The table of potion now crafted from four Wood Planks, and two Glass. This allows it to be utilized by players playing Survival and Bedrock. However, a re-upgrade will ruin the previous trinket, unless it is salvaged with the Black Lion Salvage Kit or a higher-tier salvage tool. This makes upgrading trinkets more expensive than other upgrades, but is still less expensive than buying a new one.
