Item upgrading allows players to boost the gear score of an item up to 700, and then add an additional perk. Items can be upgraded by keeping them in inventory, and then taking them to the kiln.
Certain items can be upgraded to benefit from their unique stats (like an ideally broken point armour that is rolled for melee PvP) while others like weapons do not change significantly after an upgrade, so they aren't worth upgrading.
Weapons
Weapons can be upgraded to improve their numeric stats like damage to attack, crit chance PvE and PvP damage. Weapons also come with a flat bonus that increases the damage they deal per second. In addition, many weapons have a set bonus which is activated when three or more of the same weapon is present on a single unit. In certain instances, this bonus could add up to more than the amount of damage a weapon is able to upgrade on its own.
A weapon's upgrade costs depend on the quality of the weapon and its current level. For instance, a +2 weapon will require two regular Smithing Stones while a+3 requires four. The number of stones required to upgrade a weapon will increase until it needs a higher level of Smithing Stones. At that point it will reset to one.
The upgrade of weapons can also change their base stats. While this is generally a good thing however, it could have negative consequences as well. Upgrades can render items unusable, unless you are very lucky.

After you've completed the main side quest and mastered the corresponding fountain you'll be able to speak to any Great Fairy to open up the menu for upgrading your armor.
The amount of materials required to upgrade each piece of armor is different. In general, you're looking at anything from three to five Red Chuchu jellies and 10 Rupees for the first upgrade, and then anywhere from five Rubies and 10 Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horns for each subsequent upgrade. For instance, the Champion Leathers can be upgraded to +5 defense, allowing you to keep up with a decent-sized group of enemies in the majority of cold environments and the Snowquill Headdress can be upgraded up to +20 defense, giving the protection needed to survive the full-on assault with a handful of friends.
It's important to note that armor cannot be upgraded in the same way as weapons, so you'll need to concentrate on enhancing it to increase physical power if you're a Warrior or Spell Power if you're Mage. You should also save your armor upgrades to upgrade the armor that you'll still wear by the end of the story, like the Ring of Lightning, Spectral Shield or the mask you use in the final boss fight The Monter Parts Merchant Mask.
