OBD port hacking is a new technique employed by professional auto thieves to steal cars. Thieves are able to access your vehicle's OBD with the help of a laptop, mobile application, and a few cables that can be purchased online for less than PS50. Once they have access to your vehicle's OBD port, they will be able to do whatever they want including setting fault codes, and tuning your car to taking your joy and pride away in just a few seconds.
If you have an Ghost immobiliser fitted it can protect your vehicle from theft using this method, by needing a unique PIN code sequence is entered into your key fob to start the engine and drive away. It communicates with the vehicle's ECU (Engine Control Unit) by using the CAN Data Circuit. It is not detected by any scanners for RF or code grabbing. It also includes a Service/Valet mode that will allow your vehicle to be started without needing the PIN code.
You'll also require cables with OBD pins that are connected to the CAN bus. These cables can be found on eBay and Amazon for around P50. You'll also require an OBD cable that has OBD pins which are connected to the CAN bus, these are available on eBay and Amazon for around PS50. Then, you need to splice the cable into the wire harness of your car for example, the radio wiring harness.
Once the hacker gains access to the OBD port of your vehicle, they will send diagnostics to the system using high baud rates that will cause a crash of the car's CAN and prevent the system from functioning. This can cause the engine to stop, doors to lock and even the brakes to be engaged.
