1998 Stanley Cup FinalsThe 1998 Stanley Cup Finals was the championship series of the National Hockey League's (NHL) 1997–98 season, and the culmination of the 1998 Stanley Cup playoffs. It was contested by the Western Conference champion and defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings and the Eastern Conference champion Washington Capitals. It was the 105th year of the Stanley Cup being contested. The series was the Capitals' first Stanley Cup Finals appearance in franchise history. The Red Wings swept the Capitals to repeat as Stanley Cup champions, capturing their ninth Stanley Cup in team history. This also marked the fourth consecutive, and most recent Stanley Cup Finals as of 2025 to end in a sweep. The Red Wings became the fourth team in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup in back-to-back sweeps, joining the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Islanders. Detroit coach Scotty Bowman won his eighth Stanley Cup in that capacity (having previously done so with the Montreal Canadiens in 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1979, the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1992, and the Wings the previous year), tying him with former Canadiens coach Toe Blake for the record of most Cups won by a coach (which he would break when he helped the Red Wings win the 2002 Cup).
Stanley Cup FinalsThe Stanley Cup Finals in ice hockey (also known as the Stanley Cup Final among various media, French: Finale de la Coupe Stanley) is the annual championship series of the National Hockey League (NHL). The winner is awarded the Stanley Cup, North America's oldest professional sports trophy, and one of the "most important championships available to the sport [of ice hockey]" according to the International Ice Hockey Federation. Originally inscribed the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, the trophy was donated in 1892 by Lord Stanley of Preston, then–governor general of Canada, initially as a "challenge trophy" for Canada's top-ranking amateur ice hockey club. The champions held onto the Cup until they either lost their league title to another club, or a champion from another league issued a formal challenge and defeated the reigning Cup champion in a final game to claim their win. Professional teams first became eligible to challenge for the Stanley Cup in 1906. Starting in 1915, the Cup was officially held between the champion of the National Hockey Association (NHA) and the champion of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA). After a series of league mergers and folds, it became the championship trophy of the NHL in 1926. Starting in 1982, the championship round of the NHL's playoffs has been a best-of-seven series played between the champions of the Eastern and Western Conferences. Since then, Western champions have won 21 times, while the Eastern champions have won 20 times.
1976 Stanley Cup FinalsThe 1976 Stanley Cup Finals was the championship series of the National Hockey League's (NHL) 1975–76 season, and the culmination of the 1976 Stanley Cup playoffs. It was contested by the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Philadelphia Flyers, making their third consecutive finals appearance, and the Montreal Canadiens. This was the Canadiens first appearance in the Final since their Cup win in 1973. The Canadiens swept the series to win their 19th Stanley Cup in franchise history, denying the Flyers a three-peat. This marked the first of what is currently six consecutive losses in the Cup Final for the Flyers, as they would lose in the Final again in 1980, 1985, 1987, 1997, and 2010.
1977 Stanley Cup FinalsThe 1977 Stanley Cup Finals was the championship series of the National Hockey League's (NHL) 1976–77 season, and the culmination of the 1977 Stanley Cup playoffs. It was contested between the Boston Bruins and the defending champion Montreal Canadiens. The Bruins were making their first appearance in the final series since their loss in the 1974 Final. The Canadiens would win the best-of-seven series four games to none, to win their second straight Stanley Cup championship, and 20th overall.
2023 Stanley Cup FinalsThe 2023 Stanley Cup Finals was the championship series of the National Hockey League's (NHL) 2022–23 season and the culmination of the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs. The Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Eastern Conference champion Florida Panthers four games to one in the best-of-seven series to earn their first championship in their sixth season. Vegas had home ice advantage in the series with the better regular season record. The series began on June 3, and concluded on June 13. This was the first Finals series since 2018 in which neither team had previously won the Stanley Cup. For the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Finals ran through the first weeks of June.
2024 Stanley Cup FinalsThe 2024 Stanley Cup Finals was the championship series of the National Hockey League's (NHL) 2023–24 season and the culmination of the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs. The Eastern Conference champion Florida Panthers defeated the Western Conference champion Edmonton Oilers four games to three in the best-of-seven series, earning their first championship in their thirty year history. The series began on June 8 and ended on June 24. The Panthers had home-ice advantage in the series as the team with the better regular season record, and this was the fifth consecutive Stanley Cup Finals with a team from the state of Florida. This was the furthest distance between two cities in an NHL Finals at 4,089 kilometres (2,541 miles), breaking the previous record of 4,023 km (2,500 mi), set in 2011 by the Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins. This was the first Finals since 1945 to see a team force a seventh game after being down 3–0, with Florida becoming the first team since that occurrence to win the title in seven games after nearly surrendering a 3–0 series lead. This was also the first Finals since 2018 without any overtime.
2025 Stanley Cup FinalsThe 2025 Stanley Cup Finals is the ongoing championship series of the National Hockey League's (NHL) 2024–25 season and the culmination of the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs. In a rematch of the previous year's Stanley Cup Finals, the series is being contested between the Eastern Conference and defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers and the Western Conference champion Edmonton Oilers. The best-of-seven series began on June 4, with a possible seventh game to be held on June 20. Unlike last year, Edmonton has home ice advantage in the series due to having the better regular season record. This is the sixth consecutive Finals to feature a team from Florida. This is the first time since 2009 that the Finals will feature a rematch of the previous season. It is also the first time since 2012 that neither team had home-ice advantage in the first three rounds.
