The 18 th street pink line leaves you in the Pilsen neighborhood, a predominately Mexican community, and the home to the National Museum of Mexican Art. The National Museum of Mexican Art was established in 1982 and features Latino, Chicano, and Mexican culture that aided to the expression of cultural pride in Pilsen. Mexican muralism once allowed the residents of Pilsen to express their pride for their Mexican culture but these murals have sense become cracked and chipped away and its current state only serves as reminder of the community that is slowly disappearing.
Over the past decade, neighborhoods in the Chicago land area such as Wicker Park, Linkin Park, and Pilsen’s have seen a drastic change in their demographic that has caused a negative effect on its residents. These areas have gone or are going through gentrification that has led to a spike in real estate and displacement of residents. Although residents have attempted to tackle this issue, it has been difficult and many have lost not only their home and businesses but their sense of culture as well. The murals that once gave life to Pilsen are now worn out, faded, or destroyed.
The Mural Movement was led by Diego Rivera, David Siqueiros, and José Orozco in the 1920s, post- Mexican Revolutio, in an attempt to unify the country and meant to serve as as a means to express pride and hope for the future. Mexican muralism became a large feature in the Pilsen area during the mid to late 20 th century and artists such as Hector Duarte, Mario Castillo, and Aurelio Díaz worked to make Pilsen colorful, expressive, and spoke to the issues that Latinos were currently facing. One of the works that caught my attention the most was Hector Duarte’s mural on 18 th and Bishop named “ Alto al desplazamineto urbano en Pilsen ,” which was made to demonstrate that they would not stand by and let gentrification occur within their neighborhood and that they were going to protect it. Today it stands faded and chipped. It’s mostly ironic and sad to look at it now at its withered state. It perfectly personifies what is occurring to the neighborhood and its culture.
