We all know that free Android games aren’t always free these days, but many of them are very close if you have a little patience. Most free-to-play bottlenecks occur when players get impatient and waiting for the game out can usually get around those pitfalls. What we have here are the best free Android games that you should be able to play comfortably without engaging in too many in-app purchases and we hope you enjoy them. This is a hall of fame style list so the options here will only change if something better comes along. Let’s get started.
Alto’s Odyssey is a natural choice for a free Android game. It features simple mechanics, gorgeous graphics, and a relaxing style. Players ski down a hill while avoiding obstacles and making massive jumps. There are also items to collect that can be traded in for various customization options. The game relies heavily on its wallpaper-worthy graphics. They are simple but effective and the dark, gradient colors add a good atmosphere to the game.
It’s completely free to download and play with some limited ads. There are in-app purchases, but they are all for customization stuff so it’s entirely optional and it doesn’t affect gameplay. It’s kid-friendly and fun. Noodlecake Studios also does Alto’s Adventure, the predecessor to this one. Here’s a list of the best endless runners if you want other options. Apex Legends Mobile launched in 2022 and it became an immediate success. It’s a 60-player battle royale shooter (20 teams of three players) with a couple of other game modes to keep things fresh. Players choose from a cast of Legends, each one with its own playstyle and abilities. You can unlock more as you play the game. It has some of the best controls we’ve seen in a mobile shooter and even some solo player stuff you can do if you don’t feel like playing against others. Like most battle royale games, the depth of content is a bit thin. However, it seems like people very much enjoy shooting it out in large numbers.
The Asphalt franchise has some of mobile’s most popular racing games. Asphalt 8: Airborne and Asphalt Xtreme were the big ones in the series. However, Asphalt 9: Legends came out in July 2018. This is the most recent game in the series now. It includes 50 cars, a bunch of challenges, and a bunch of content to play with. That includes online multiplayer, single-player stuff, and more.
It uses an auto-go mechanism so you can’t control your acceleration. To be honest, it’s not the best implementation, but you get used to it. The graphics are good and there are social elements as well. It’s a freemium game. Thus, the online competitive aspect may be skewed a bit. However, the single-player stuff is classically good arcade racing. You can also skip in-app purchases with extra grinding. It’s tedious but entirely doable. Brawl Stars is Supercell’s latest hit game. It’s a brawler with online multiplayer elements as well as some MOBA elements. Players drop into a game with a couple of teammates, brawl with opponents, and try to win. There are a few game modes, including a straight brawl mode, a mode where you collect crystals, a heist mode where you steal the opponent’s treasure, and a bounty mode where you beat specific opponents on a team.
It feels like a Supercell game and that’s mostly a good thing. Supercell also makes Clash Royale, Clash of Clans, and Boom Beach. All of those could also easily go on a list like this if you like auto battlers (Clash Royale) or kingdom builder strategy games (Clash of Clans and Boom Beach). Call of Duty: Mobile is one of the newer games on this list. We usually wait a bit to see how a game plays out, but this one is so intensely popular and so intensely good that we had to add it basically immediately. The game includes classic online FPS PvP like any Call of Duty. However, it also includes a 100-player battle royale mode similar to PUBG Mobile and Fortnite. That puts it in a rare category of a good regular FPS game like Critical Ops as well as a good battle royale like PUBG Mobile.
The game has in-app purchases, but they seem to be solely for cosmetic gear and a good amount of it is available as in-game rewards. The gameplay is good and people seem to really like this one. It’s relatively new so there are some bugs, but those should be ironed out over time. There are some other great FPS games if this one doesn’t do it for you.
EA has the market cornered on sports games. They are the only developer with yearly launches for most sports, including their Madden NFL Overdrive game, FIFA Soccer, NBA Live Mobile, EA Sports UFC, and others. These games all have very similar elements. You can play the actual sport and there is a sim mechanic in all of these games. The graphics are usually pretty decent and the controls are generally good. However, EA sports games have heavy free-to-play elements. That is a frequent frustration for many players and it makes it difficult to recommend EA in general.
Unfortunately, EA is the only developer that consistently makes games for most sports so that makes them the best by default. Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is perhaps the best Final Fantasy-themed freemium game out there. It features tons of elements from the original games, including actual town and dungeon explorations, hidden treasures, secret dungeons, and tons of lore. The gameplay is simple to learn but you’ll need to think critically in order to beat bosses and hard opponents. You’re frequently rewarded for logging in daily and additional missions, quests, and activities help keep the game fresh.
This is about as good as it gets for free-to-play titles. Square Enix launched a spiritual successor, War of the Visions: FFBE in early 2020 and it’s an improving strategy RPG game . It’s not nearly as good as regular Brave Exvius, though. You can find some other great gachas here , including Square Enix’s newest game, Echoes of Mana ( Google Play ).
Genshin Impact was a surprise release that is actually pretty good. It’s a mix of an action RPG with a gacha element. It has most of the usual gacha elements, including a story to play through and plenty of teammates to summon. However, this one is a lot less restrictive and comes with a completely open world and some satisfying combat mechanics. The graphics and gameplay are both surprisingly good. Plus, you can play with people on PS4, iOS, and PC as well. This is a sneaky good game despite its free-to-play price tag and gacha label.
League of Legends: Wild Rift launched in 2021 and it’s already one of the best mobile MOBAs. It features 5v5 gameplay with fairly balanced champions. Matches take about 15-20 minutes on average which is a bit long for mobile gaming. However, everything else about it is pretty decent. We especially like that you can’t buy wins in this game. Everybody has the same champion options.
The only downside is matchmaking. Casual playlists sometimes put lower-tier players against more experienced players for some lopsided games. That is a trend in today’s gaming anyway, though, and there isn’t much that can be done. Here is a list of more good MOBAs in case you want to see them.
Legends of Runeterra is the newest game on the list. It’s a card dueling game similar to Hearthstone (another excellent free-to-play game). Players collect cards, build decks, and duel each other until someone wins. You pick a champion, build the deck around it, and that helps define your strategy. It’s honestly a lot like the Commander game type in Magic: The Gathering.
It’s also the latest mobile game by Riot Games, developers of the super popular League of Legends. Their other mobile offerings include Teamfight Tactics (another good free-to-play game) as well as their upcoming mobile version of League of Legends . Of course, there are other excellent card-style dueling games here as well.

Nintendo is an easy recommendation for free Android games. They have games in a variety of different genres and most of them tug at the nostalgia factor. Some Nintendo titles include Dragalia Lost, Fire Emblem: Heroes, Mario Kart Tour, and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. There is also a Dr. Mario World game if you like puzzles. Each game is cleanly done with smooth gameplay and colorful graphics. A few, like Mario Kart Tour, are a bit rough around the edges with its free-to-play elements, but otherwise, Nintendo does a great job of delivering good experiences.

Pocket City is as close to SimCity as you can get on Android. The game starts out as many other city builders. You build roads, residential zones, commercial zones, and important buildings. There are disasters to deal with and surprisingly deep economic and crime mechanics to keep track of. The free version of the game doesn’t have quite as many features as the premium version and it has ads as well.
However, most of the extra features are just that, extras, and you can play the core game for free without paying for it. This is easily one of the best simulators on Android right now, even if it had a rough patch when it started.
Pokemon Go was the biggest mobile game of 2016. Even though its popularity has tapered off a bit, the game is still a very solid free option. It even saw a resurgence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Players can explore the real world around them all while catching Pokemon, taking down gyms, and finding Pokestops. New additions include legendary Pokemon, raid battles, trainer battles (with some caveats), and more. You can even trade Pokemon in the game now.
The game continues to evolve beyond what many remember it to be. When it eventually ends its run, it’ll go down as one of the greatest and most iconic mobile games ever. It stands alone atop the best augmented reality games list .
Roblox is one of the most popular games in the world right now. It’s a sandbox game with a metric ton of content to play through. The game is ancient by mobile gaming standards, but the ever-increasing amount of things to do keeps it relevant to this day. Players can play stuff that other players create or create stuff themselves.
The mobile app has complete cross-platform support with the other versions of the game and includes a chat function. The downloadable content is occasionally NSFW, so make sure to monitor your kids if you let them play. Here are some other great sandbox games as well.

And, while there are quite a lot of options out there, not all of them are that great. To help you, we’ve tested, rated, and rounded up our top picks here so you can skip those fumbled console ports and boring puzzle games for some amazing touchscreen titles.
We’ve also taken a look at these games to see where cost is involved since some might have that free sticker on their Google Play Store page but require an in-app purchase to truly unlock the game. If that’s the case, we’ll let you know so that you’re aware that the game is not really free.

Genshin Impact was Voted Best Mobile Game at the TechRadar Choice Awards 2021
Kombinera (opens in new tab) is a tricky platform puzzler set across a range of minimalist single-screen levels. The aim is to have all your colored balls combine into one. The problem is that the world they live in wants the balls to be eradicated from existence.
As in traditional side-on platform games, progress depends on precision movement to avoid traps littered about the place. Balls also have powers – for example, the pink one can trundle across pink spikes. But deviously designed level layouts and the fact that all your balls move simultaneously makes it tough to find safe routes and execute a complete solution.
Echoing creator Atari’s past, Kombinera isn’t the most forgiving game. But like the classics of old, the game’s rewarding when you crack a level you’d been stuck on for ages.

Table Top Racing: World Tour (opens in new tab) is a high-speed racer that has you guide tiny cars around circuits made from comparatively massive household objects. It’s like the offspring of Micro Machines and Mario Kart. Races are extremely competitive, and find you fending off crazed opponents by way of cunning maneuvers and unsportsmanlike weapons, in a mad dash to the finish line.
Although there are opportunities to upgrade your vehicle to better compete on tougher tracks, World Tour is devoid of IAP. Instead, it’s your skills that will see you take checkered flags – and end up with enough cash to buy swanky new cars.
With simple but responsive controls, this Android game is a breath of fresh air on a platform where arcade racing is often as much about the depth of your wallet as your skills on the track.
GRID Autosport (opens in new tab) is a racer, but also a challenge to Android gamers complaining they never get premium titles, and that freemium fare comes packed with ads and IAP. This is a full-on ad-free premium AAA hit, transferred intact to your phone (assuming your phone can run it – see the list on the game’s Google Play page).
Even on PC and consoles, GRID Autosport was impressive stuff on its release. Five or so years on, it’s no less astonishing as a mobile title, as you blaze around 100 circuits, battling it out in a huge range of cars.
This is, note, a simulation. It won’t go easy on you, or allow you to smash through walls at top speed and carry on as though nothing’s happened, but driving aids help you master what’s without a doubt the finest premium racing experience on Android.
Repulze (opens in new tab) exists in a future beyond racers driving cars far too quickly; instead, they’re placed in experimental hovercraft that belt along at insane speeds. Track design’s traditions have also been ditched, flat courses being replaced by roller-coaster-like constructions that throw you around in stomach-churning fashion.
The game’s split into three phases. It begins with time trials that have you pass through specific colored gates, and ends with you taking on AI opponents, occasionally – and unsportingly – blowing them up with weapons.
There’s a sci-fi backstory about synthetic men and corporations, but really this one’s all about speed. At first, the twitchy controls will find you repeatedly smashing into tracksides and wondering if someone should take your hovercraft license away. But master the tracks and controls alike, and Repulze becomes an exhilarating experience as you bomb along toward the finish line.
Rush Rally 3 (opens in new tab) brings console-style rally racing to Android. For quick blasts, you can delve into single rally mode, with a co-driver bellowing in your ear; or there’s the grinding metal of rallycross, pitting you against computer cars apparently fueled by aggression. If you’re in it for the long haul, immerse yourself in a full career mode.
None of those options would matter a jot if the racing wasn’t up to much. Fortunately, it’s really good. The game looks the part, with very smart visuals and viewpoints, whether belting around a racing circuit or blazing through a forest.
The controls work well, too, providing a number of setups to accommodate a range of preferences (tilt; virtual buttons) – and skill levels. All in all, it’s enough for the game to get that coveted checkered flag.
If you're fed up with racing games paying more attention to whether the tarmac looks photorealistic rather than how much fun it should be to zoom along at insane speeds, check out Horizon Chase (opens in new tab) . This tribute to old-school arcade titles is all about the sheer joy of racing, rather than boring realism.
The visuals are vibrant, the soundtrack is jolly and cheesy, and the racing finds you constantly battling your way to the front of an aggressive pack.

Anyone expecting the kind of free-roaming racing from the console versions of this title are going to be miffed, but Need for Speed: Most Wanted (opens in new tab) is nonetheless one of the finest games of its kind on Android. Yes, the tracks are linear, with only the odd shortcut, but the actual racing bit is superb.
You belt along the seedy streets of a drab, gray city, trying to win events that will boost your ego and reputation alike. Wins swell your coffers, enabling you to buy new vehicles for entering special events.
The game looks gorgeous on Android and has a high-octane soundtrack to urge you onwards. But mostly, this one’s about the controls – a slick combination of responsive tilt and effortless drifting that makes everything feel closer to OutRun 2 than typically sub-optimal mobile racing fare.
