Marking a PA-18 ASI

Does anyone have the numbers handy for marking an airspeed indicator on a PA-18. My son has a checkride coming up and the designee will probably want the thing marked properly. I just need white band, green band, and redline.

Mach speeds not important!

Thanks,
murph

Airspeed Limits Maneuvering 96 mp ( 83 knots)
Maximum Structural Cruise 121 mp (105 knots)
(TRUE INDICATED) Never exceed 153 mp (133 knots)
Flaps extended 85 mp ( 74 knots)

Paint a white white mark between the glass and the instrument case. I have some instrument marking stickers from A/C Spruce or someone. They work nice.

Murph,

I used Marks A Lot magic markers in green yellow and red and it worked great. Not sure about the white arc as I don't have one.

The Feds are a stickler for the white dot if the instrument is marked on the face. That way you can tell if the glass rotated. Tell Cody good luck. I know he won't have any problem, plenty of practise and a good teacher. And he learned in a real airplane.

The FAA was happy with my magic marker ASI markings, but again, I don't have flaps. Might have to use some whiteout for that part of the arc...

My tach is unmarked otherwise.

Murph........I got some pinstriping in those colors from a local body shop and stuck 'em around the outer edge of the glass.

If you ever have the instruments replaced or overhauled, large shops like Keystone can silk screen the arcs on the instrument faces. Most examiners will accept the stickers, but I have heard a few won't, it might be worth a call before the ride to make sure. I wish Cody lots of luck, he'll do fine.

Hey Murph, After watching Cody fly at the lodge, he could give the examiner tailwheel lessons. P.S. Just tell the examiner that he flys with the window open always and the Texas wind keeps blowing the arcs of the indicator .

Take a look at this Murph. Should be enough to do a bunch of gauges.

At the next SC shindig Murph will mark everyones instruments except Diggler's cause his are already done. He got me on that one cause I did the previous annual. Marbe Rick is right, the TX wind blew em off.

I didn't respond to Diggler because he doesn't understand our way of operating in TX. He probably has a logbook and all that stuff.

This website is psychic! I am just having one marked up.

My POH (Report no. 834), however, it sometimes cannot convert mph to knots.

It gives green arc, 47-121mph or 38-106 knots. BUT 38 knots = 44mph

It gives white arc 43-85mph or 35-74 knots. BUT 35knots = 40mph.

I used this calculator:

http://www.crh.noaa.gov/pub/metcon.shtml

The other values seem to roughly agree.

Can anyone tell me what the lower values should actually be in these two cases? I appreciate it is of minimal importance in reality because they are at the lower ends, but one might as well get it right.

Looks like it's the MPH figures which are right, rather than the knots. My Univair 'Owner's Manual' thingy gives gross weight power off stall speed as 43 MPH with full flap and 47 MPH with flaps up.

Murph, tell Cody I said good luck on his checkride - I'm sure he'll do fine.

Everything in my books is in mph, so I would guess that's right, rather than knots.

Anne.
