Players can upgrade their weapons and equipment by adding new accessories. They can also increase the base stats of the item or provide additional benefits. To upgrade an item, a player has to have it in their inventory as well as access to the kiln.

Upgrade components

In the case of upgrades to gather tools when a player swaps one glyph with another, the old glyph will be returned to the inventory. If you replace any other upgrade component the item will be destroyed, except for the inscriptions, which can be swapped freely.
Leveling
Path of Exile's upgrade process is different from the previous versions in a few key ways. Gear is now classified into tracks, and each item is able to be upgraded as many times before it's "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level however, the materials needed aren't as high. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a few items and maximize the effect of these items, rather than spreading upgrade costs over multiple pieces.
When an item is finished being leveled, it will be eligible for a new set of upgrade components, and an increase in the probability that the upgrade will succeed. This bonus is known as the Artisan’s Energy and it resets at 0 if the upgrade fails or increases when the upgrade succeeds.

Each upgrade step will require the use of a certain amount of Flightstones and crests to complete based on the item's current level and the item slot it's in. Typically, weapons require more Flightstones to upgrade than other kinds of equipment.
If an item does not attain its maximum level The NPC will offer players the option to transfer it to a different character and re-infuse it with another set of upgrades. This process can take between one and two hours and will cost the same amount of material. However it has a lower rate of success.

Generally speaking generally speaking, jewelry and weapons offer more value for trade when they are fully upgraded than armor. Upgrades to gold are recommended for weapons that have spell/weapon-damage glyphs. This will result in a significant improvement in their stats. Armor that has an upgraded appearance will also benefit from this as its defense value will increase as it goes from purple to gold.
