A 16-YEAR-OLD boy who targeted two lesbian lovers on a night bus by pelting them with coins and asking them to perform sex acts was today let off with a referral order.
Melania Ramirez, a 28-year-old doctor from Uruguay, and Christine Hannigan were targeted by three teenagers on the N31 in Camden, North London, on 30 May.
Shocking CCTV caught the 16-year-old boy and two other males, aged 15 and 17, terrorising the women for nine minutes.
The 17-year-old, from Chelsea, was sentenced to a four-month youth rehabilitation order for harassing the couple last month.
The footage showed him making grabbing his throat and sticking his tongue out, making a sexual gesture.
Dr Ramirez had shared a photograph of herself and her partner covered in blood after the incident which was reported across the globe.
The attackers had surrounded the women on the top deck of the bus before making crude “scissoring” gestures with their fingers.
Ms Hannigan pretended to be sick in an apparent bid to discourage the group before they began throwing coins at her and her partner.
While she confronted the group the 16-year-old grabbed Dr Ramirez's handbag and made off with it.
The teenagers had admitted harassment under the Public Order Act at Highbury Corner Youth Court on 28 November.
The 16-year-old also admitted a second charge of harassment, theft and handling stolen goods.
He appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court for sentencing today and shook his head as the prosecution described the “taunting” and “degrading” attack.
They started making references to their sexual orientation and saying things like 'are you lesbians' and 'do you two scissor'?
Maria Slater, prosecuting, said: “Ms Hannigan stated that the group surrounded them and immediately started making references to their sexual orientation and saying things like 'are you lesbians' and 'do you two scissor'?
“She felt this term was used to taunt and degrade homosexual women. She said she began to feel invaded at the point.
“Another male then began to make scissor gestures with his fingers.
“They asked them: 'how do you have sex?' and also asked them 'show us'.
“Both said they felt they wanted them to perform for them - that was their feelings.
“They also said that the group at some point tried to make them kiss and engage in some form of sexual activity and throughout continued to call them derogatory terms like 'lesbian'.”
Reading from Ms Ramirez' statement, Ms Slater said: "I'm feeling so angry and so upset right now. I'm feeling such a strong pain."
Bench chairman Peter Bullet sentenced the 16-year-old today to an eight-month youth referral order and 12 hours' reparation.
Dr Bullet said: “By all accounts this was an unpleasant situation with offences committed by a large group in the early hours in a public space against two women on their own and it would seem it was a homophobic trigger that was the context of this behaviour.”
Detective Constable Darren Barlow, from the Met's Roads and Transport Command (RTPC), said: “No one should ever be victimised because of their sexuality and I hope that this result brings some form of closure to both victims and they can put this ordeal behind them.”
The 16-year-old, of Wandsworth, admitted two counts of harassment, theft, and handling stolen goods.
He was sentenced to an eight-month youth referral order, 12 hours' reparation and ordered to pay £220 in fines and prosecution costs.
The 15-year-old is due to be sentenced for harassment and handling Ms Ramirez’s stolen bank card at Highbury Corner Youth Court on Monday.
