150-Site EU EAA & WCAG 2.2 AA DOM Benchmark: Top 5 Anonymized Failures & Drop-In Code Fixes (2026)

150-Site EU EAA & WCAG 2.2 AA DOM Benchmark: Top 5 Anonymized Failures & Drop-In Code Fixes (2026)

MYSTIQUE LAB Engineering

We ran automated headless Chromium Playwright DOM inspections against EN 301 549 v3.2.1 (European Accessibility Act Directive (EU) 2019/882 & German BFSG §14) and WCAG 2.2 Level AA across 150 production Shopify Plus / DTC storefronts, B2B DevTools / SaaS platforms, and Webflow / Shopify partner agencies (mystiquelab.dev/audits).

While the 150 sites averaged 78.9 / 100 on standard launch readiness (SSL, HTTP 200, SEO, OpenGraph), they averaged 41.1 / 100 (86.0% Grade F) on EU EAA / WCAG 2.2 AA compliance. Below are the Top 5 Anonymized DOM Failure Patterns responsible for over 90% of violations—plus drop-in CSS, HTML, and ARIA remediation snippets.

1. Missing /accessibility Statutory Conformance Statement — 90.0% (135 / 150 Sites)

EU Directive (EU) 2019/882 Annex IV and Germany's BFSG §14 require a publicly linked /accessibility conformance disclosure in the global footer stating EN 301 549 v3.2.1 / WCAG 2.2 AA status, known exceptions, a direct feedback contact email, and the national market surveillance authority link.

2. Interactive Touch Targets Smaller Than 24x24 CSS px (WCAG 2.2 SC 2.5.8 AA) — 100.0% (150 / 150 Sites)

Every single site tested shipped compact carousel pagination dots, filter chips, quantity steppers, or cookie-banner close icons smaller than the WCAG 2.2 SC 2.5.8 minimum of 24x24 CSS pixels.

/* Drop-in WCAG 2.2 SC 2.5.8 AA Target Size Hotfix */
button, a.icon-link, [role="button"], input[type="checkbox"], input[type="radio"] {
  min-width: 24px;
  min-height: 24px;
  display: inline-flex;
  align-items: center;
  justify-content: center;
}

3. Text Contrast Ratio Below 4.5:1 (WCAG 2.2 SC 1.4.3 AA) — 84.7% (127 / 150 Sites, 2,539 Total Elements)

Across the 150 sites, we recorded 2,539 contrast failures (16.9 avg/site), driven primarily by muted gray utility classes (#94a3b8 on white = 2.56:1) and translucent hero badges.

:root {
  --text-muted-aa: #475569; /* 7.04:1 on #ffffff, 6.45:1 on #f8fafc */
  --badge-bg-aa: #0f172a;
  --badge-text-aa: #ffffff; /* 17.8:1 contrast ratio */
}

Cart drawer toggles, mobile hamburger menus, and search triggers wrapping an inline <svg> without an explicit aria-label caused 1,227 unlabeled control failures (8.2 avg/site).

<button type="button" class="cart-toggle" aria-label="Open shopping cart">
  <svg viewBox="0 0 24 24" aria-hidden="true" focusable="false"><path d="..."/></svg>
</button>

5. Missing Image alt Attributes (512), Unlabeled Form Inputs (38) & Viewport Zoom Locks (16 Sites)

Sixteen sites blocked 200% pinch-to-zoom using maximum-scale=1 or user-scalable=no (an automatic CRITICAL fail under WCAG 2.2 SC 1.4.4), while 40 sites shipped 512 product/hero images without alt attributes and 27 sites shipped 38 newsletter/checkout inputs without programmatic labels.
