What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes
The name implies that a transponder sends out an encoded signal that contains the four-digit code when it is interrogated by air traffic control. This signal is called an SQUAWK code and it is the basis for aircraft identification on radar screens. It is also used to send specific messages to air traffic control in the event of an emergency or to alert air traffic controllers to changes in weather conditions.
