South Korea's democratic system is prone to populist tendencies. It is still healthier than expected.

The country is searching for a new way of developing. The Confucian culture, which stresses respect for the ancestors as and gender-specific family relationships, continues to be influential in the society. However, there are signs that a secularist culture is emerging.

Origins

In prehistoric times the ancestors of the modern Koreans lived by hunting and gathering wild food. In the tens of thousands of years after, they began to grow crops including millet and beans. They also raised livestock and made furs. They also established tribal states one after the other in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also established an industry of metalworking, making bronze tools and later iron ones. They traded with other states and introduced cedon, paper making block printing, art styles and a written language to Japan.

In 2333 BCE Gojoseon was established in the southern region of the peninsula. The state adopted Buddhism and adopted Chinese culture including Confucian philosophy. During this time, the people of Buyeo joined Gojoseon. Gojoseon had a hierarchical structure with a monarch and high-ranking officials were drawn from the landed aristocracy, while the rest of the population were peasants. The state collected taxes from these citizens, and often required them to fight in the army or work on projects of the government, like building fortifications.

At the end of the period, the state of Baekje was established by Onjo who was a prince of Goguryeo and the son of Jumong who was the founder of Goguryeo. This new kingdom expanded into the southwest part of the peninsula, and fought with China's commandos and Goguryeo's in the area. Baekje included elements of Confucian thought into its state belief system and made the male-centric filiopiety idea as a law in 1390 CE. Under the guise of filiopiety fathers were accountable to their families and they must be respected and obeyed by all people, even their children and grandchildren.

Goryeo, a country which ruled from 918 until 1392 CE in the year 1392 CE, introduced to the world the Hangul Alphabet based on the patterns created by the mouth when pronouncing. This greatly improved communication between people, and led to an explosion in the writing of Buddhist texts. Additionally, movable metal type printing was introduced, and woodblock printing was refined. It was during this period that the Samguk sagi or 'History of the Three Kingdoms' first appeared in 1145 CE.

Development in Korea

The Korean peninsula was inhabited from Neolithic times until. Early evidence of human settlements is evident in the form cist graves lined with stone, with precious items such as amazonite jewelry being buried alongside the dead. Megalithic structures, referred to as dolmens, built from huge single stones, are also prevalent throughout the country.

In the first part of the 1st millennium BCE, Gojoseon established itself as the first recognized political state. The peninsula was then controlled by a variety of states during the Three Kingdoms Period (57 BC-635 CE), including Baekje and Goguryeo. Additionally, the northern part of the peninsula was ruled by the Balhae kingdom, which most historians don't consider to be a legitimate Korean state.

Following the Three Kingdoms, several smaller states emerged during the Proto-Three Kingdoms period, or Several States Period (yeolgugsidae). In all of them, Baekje was the most powerful however, its dynasty ended when Goguryeo was defeated in 676 CE and left the southern provinces of Manchuria and the western region around Hwanghae Bay, while eastern Buyeo and the Gaya confederacy prospered for a period of time.

The Unified Silla Kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms started to work together to expand their territories. In the final phase, Silla, with significant Chinese aid, conquered all other states and united the peninsula in 935 CE.

As Korea enters the post-crisis era, its development paradigm is in flux. People who are shocked by the huge cost of the old system are urging the need for a comprehensive program of liberalization of capital as well as labor markets. On the other hand, supporters of the old system try to preserve it through nationalist sentiments, as well as by stoking fears of job loss.

The academic and policy analysts remain sharply divided on the extent to the extent that these two developments are driving Koreas development towards a new model of economic governance. This article reviews the latest developments by analyzing five phases of Korea's political development: the illiberal democratic period (1945-60), democratic authoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87) democratic paternalism (1987-2001), and participatory democracy (2002 to present). Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made strides in promoting their views to this segment. A 2009 survey revealed that almost a third of respondents did not believe in evolution. Of those who voted, 41% stated that there was no scientific evidence to support the theory; 39% said it contradicted their religious beliefs, and 17% said they did not comprehend it. This level of disbelief approaches that of the United States, where a similar number of people do not accept that humans evolved from less advanced types of life.

In the past, the anti-evolution campaign in Korea focused primarily on educating students and in bringing Christ to them. A significant increase in the interest in creation science occurred in 1980, with the inauguration of a four-day seminar during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul that included Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the featured speakers. The event attracted a large audience of scientists, professors and church leaders.

The event's success resulted in the formation of the Korea Association of Creation Research on January 31st of 1980. The event was extensively covered in the national media, including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.

KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter, CREATION, which reported on its activities and also published articles on scientific evidence for creationism. It also translated several slides and film strips from ICR, as well as some books on the subject that were published outside of Korea. KACR members also gave talks at universities and churches throughout the country.

A KACR success was seen at KAIST University in Seoul. Students at KAIST in Seoul were so keen on the concept of creationism that they raised funds and received funding to build a small museum dedicated to creation on campus.

In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine called CREATION, that covers topics related to creation science, and it has sponsored a series of lectures by ICR staff. It also has a network of local branch offices that give talks and seminars to children and other community groups.

In the latter half of the 19th century and beginning of 20th, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok, was replaced with miniskirts, and other foreign fashion elements. The traditional Korean music was also replaced by rock and roll and jazz. In the period of this transition the famous samulnori, also known as masked dancing-dramas were very popular. These dramatic dances were performed to the accompaniment of shaman drums as well as different musical instruments.

Korea's new model of development is being formed in the wake of the economic crisis. The main challenge for the new regime is to strike an equilibrium between market-oriented and state-led economic policies. In the process, it entered into frequent confrontation with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanderies across the border.

The decline of Silla in the late 8th and 9th centuries enabled powerful local factions to rise. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as its capital. He controlled a part of today's Jeolla province as well as Chungcheong. Later, he moved the capital to Wansanju and became a rival of Goguryeo.

However the rule of his was short-lived. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935 and unified Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla and later joined Baekje into Goryeo without a fight as his successor. Additionally, Wang Geon introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened a central ruling system. This marked the closing of the Three Kingdoms period. The Korean peninsula was then controlled by the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla slowly developed into powerful states on the peninsula as well as in Manchuria.
