What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes

The name implies that transponders transmit an encoded signal that contains the four-digit code when it is being questioned by air traffic control. This signal is called a SQUAWK code and is the basis for aircraft identification on radar screens. It can also be used to send specific messages to the air traffic control system in an emergency situation or to alert controllers of changing weather conditions. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is unable speak on the radio. They are crucial to ensure safe flying.

Each aircraft is equipped with a transponder that responds to radar probes by displaying an identifier. This enables ATC to identify an aircraft that is surrounded by screens. Mode S transponders provide more detailed information including call signs and location that can be helpful in airspace that is crowded.

A common sight is a small brown box under the seat of a pilot in the majority of aircraft. The transponder is a tiny beige box used to transmit the SQUAWK code whenever the air traffic control is activated on the aircraft. The transponder is set to be in the ON position, ALT position, or SBY (standby) position.

It's not uncommon to hear a pilot being directed by air traffic control to "squawk ident". This is a directive for the pilots to press their transponder's IDENT button. The ident button causes the aircraft to blink on ATC's radar screens, allowing the pilot to easily recognize your airplane on the screen.

There are 63 distinct code blocks that can be assigned to an aircraft. However there are reserved codes that prohibit the use of specific codes in areas with high traffic or in times of emergency. The block configuration of the discrete code is built on statistical analysis in order to minimize the chance of two aircraft with identical SQUAWK code being within the same sector.
