Narwal Freo X Ultra

A top-rated high-quality, highly-functional Gen 4 robot vacuum and mop that has a new approach to design, the Freo X Ultra is a very well-built machine. The price of $1400 may be hard to swallow but it's often offered for sale to make it more affordable. The unit is stunning, and the base occupies very small space in a corner.

The design of this machine addresses the issues we've faced with other robotic mop and vacuum units, including brushes that get tangled up in hair and the brush not being able to reach the bare flooring underneath furniture. The ability to sweep floors and carpets is also impressive. The vacuum/mop has a high level debris pickup and the mop is able to quickly saturate bare flooring.

The mops use a smart system that cleans along the edges of walls, and around furniture. The robot avoids most bulkier obstacles such as food bowls, toys shoes, and backpacks with any problem. It can get tangled or stuck with smaller, less hefty objects like shoelaces, USB cable and pen.

This robot was used to vacuum and mop hardwood floors, FLOR carpet tiles and pile rugs in an open-plan home. With FREO Mind enabled, it vacuumed and mopped a 90m2 space in around 170 minutes that's close to average for Gen 4.

Certain features differentiate this robot from other models in its class. The Freo X Ultra has a array of sensors, software and hardware enhancements designed to keep it at the top of its category. It promises 3.5 hours of autonomy for environments up 260m2.

Freo's app lets you customize multiple functions, including how often the robot comes back to the base station. You can also change the frequency of mopping as well as the power level (silent or smart) or the mopping humidity. The app can also identify areas with a lot of dirt and devise a streamlined cleaning route, and give detergent out or raise the pads on carpet.

Other impressive features include a clear display on the robot's bottom and the dock door is convenient to open. The Freo X Ultra vacuum and mop is ideal for home and apartment owners who want to simplify their chores and keep their homes clean.

Miele Scout RX3

The RX3 features dual suction technology, intelligent navigation with 3D mapping and a camera that transmits live images to your smartphone for simple control. Get More Information RX3's powerful four-stage system provides excellent dust collection on hard floors and carpets. Side brushes that can be swung out as well as dual suction channels and intuitive controls clean corners. The 8.5 cm height means it can get under furniture that is low, and front cameras and infrared sensors aid it navigate around obstacles and thresholds with ease.

In our test of how it cleaned baking soda near corners and on baseboards, the Scout RX3 was impressive. Its 2,500Pa of suction was less powerful than other robots, but it was able to move quickly and was extremely quiet. It didn't mop however its washable pads were a bit difficult to attach and could not deal with dirt that had dried on.

Its app isn't equipped with advanced features like multiple cleaning modes or automated scheduling. It works with Alexa but its voice controls don't seem to be very intuitive or responsive. It's also a bit flaky when it comes back to the charging station following a run. Other robots can follow an obstruction or follow the previous route however, the RX3 stumbles around until it finally gives up.

Another issue we had was with its smart features, specifically the mapping function and digital keep-out zones. While it did a good job of avoiding our furniture legs and shoes but it could easily be hung up by socks and cables, and was unable to handle the tassels that adorn carpets. That's the reason we didn't choose to include it in our Best Buy list. Still, with a decent price and a dazzling performance, the Scout RX3 is worth considering when you're looking for a smarter alternative to the traditional uprights.
