Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. They also increase bonuses like crit chance and PvE damage.
For instance an item with the upgrade template ending in % will gain 3damage to attack each time it upgrades (relative to its previous value).
The cost of upgrading an item increases as it reaches the current level of the item. The cost increases as the level of the item increases.
Components
Upgrade components can be incorporated into trinkets, armor, and weapons to provide them with a boost in stats or an extra effect. They can be obtained through crafting, buying from vendors or trading with other players, or looting. Some upgrades have special cosmetic effects.
Upgrade components can only be used on equipment that has a slot. The item must be upgraded to blue before the component can be used. Like other mods, upgrade components can only be used once; they cannot be applied multiple times or replaced by new upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a special type of upgrade component that is designed for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment as well as the non-ascended back items. Enrichments and Infusions can be obtained by salvaging equipment from the ascended state or by completing a mission within the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.
A prefix or suffix can be added to an upgrade, which alters the name of the item it's applied to (for example, 'Canthan Armor Insignia',' changes to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, allowing players make stronger versions of the equipment with less Upgrade Crystals than would be required to reach the same level of upgrade using normal methods.
A boost upgrade is a way to modify the attack or defense properties of a weapon, or armor. After the player has completed the cutscene and defeated the Crazed Mechanist the upgrades can be created at the Portative Forging Station. They can be dropped by enemies while upgrading other gear, or by purchasing them from the cash store for 500 upgrade crystals.

The new item also has its own bonus. This could be a drawback since the item may be more expensive even if you don't require it.
If the player has enough tokens they can roll item upgrades. The item will be replaced by a brand new one that has a base of level 1 and completely different bonuses. This is a good idea, but should not be used frequently as it can be a waste of resources.
