A social media video clip reportedly showing two students having sex in a Maryland high school classroom is under investigation by school officials and legal authorities.
The incident occurred in a classroom within Woodlawn High School, a school in the Baltimore County town of Gwynn Oak. Upon learning of the video, Principal Jamel Jernigan alerted parents in an October 8 letter. The letter has only recently been reported by local media.
"I was recently made aware of a social media post of a video involving Woodlawn High School students engaged in highly inappropriate behavior while in class," the letter said, according to WJZ-TV.
"An investigation is underway with school administration, our [Baltimore County Public Schools] safety manager and the Baltimore County Police Department," the letter continued.
Jernigan's letter didn't specify how many students were involved, their ages or the date of the incident. A student is believed to have recorded the incident, the aforementioned news outlet noted. It's also unclear if the alleged sex act or the reposting of the video constituted crimes.
The principal's letter did state, however, that students could be subject to possible disciplinary action if their behavior was found to be "inappropriate for the school environment."
The school has reportedly declined to comment on the case beyond acknowledging the existence of the principal's letter.
Newsweek contacted the Baltimore County Police Department for comment.
The recording and transfer of sexual content between teens have become more common as more teens own smartphones, the journal Pediatrics reported in May 2019.
At least 1 in 4 teens has received sexually explicit texts or emails, according to an April 2018 study published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics . Approximately 1 in 12 teens has forwarded sexual content to others without the consent of the sexual partners involved, the study added.
Sometimes sexual content is sent out to others as a form of cyberbullying known as "revenge porn." Revenge porn, which can originate from a former sexual partner or someone else who recorded other people's sex acts without their knowledge, is often meant to shame sexual partners.
U.S. state laws on teen sexting vary widely from state to state. The laws and their application depend on several factors. Those factors include the age of the people involved, the explicitly graphic nature of the content itself and how widely the content is shared.
Some states have decriminalized the production and sharing of teenage sexual content between teens, as long as the creation and sharing are consensual. Other states punish teen sexting as a misdemeanor charge or with felony child pornography charges.
Maryland has laws forbidding revenge porn, according to Cyberbulling.org. Maryland teens who engage in sexting can receive up to 20 years in prison and a lifetime sexual offender status for producing or possessing teen sexual content, the Pediatrics article noted.
"Interestingly, in these states, a teen sexter can be charged as both an offender and a victim," the article said.

One unforeseen consequence of the rise of the internet has been an explosion in the illicit trade of child sexual abuse images and videos.
[That’s over 563,461 reports per week.]
Child sexual abuse material (legally known as child pornography) refers to any content that depicts sexually explicit activities involving a child. Visual depictions include photographs, videos, digital or computer generated images indistinguishable from an actual minor. These images and videos that involve the documentation of an actual crime scene are then circulated for personal consumption. More recently, live-streaming sexual abuse has begun to surface. In these instances individuals pay to watch the live abuse of a child via a video streaming service. This type of abuse is incredibly difficult to detect, due to its real-time nature and the lack of digital evidence left behind following the crime.
Though child sexual abuse material (CSAM) is a global issue, the United States remains one of the largest producers and consumers of child abuse content in the world. It’s important to understand the true nature and pervasiveness of child sexual abuse material to convey the urgent need to address this crime.
While “child pornography” remains the legal term for this material, the subject matter is one of the most violent, horrific forms of child abuse possible. For this reason, those working to combat this type of abuse have begun using the term “child sexual abuse material” (CSAM), which more accurately conveys the content and is explicitly tied to the source of the problem.
While there are studies that indicate risk factors that may increase the potential for exposure to sexual abuse, the ages and backgrounds of victims of sexual abuse know no bounds. Child sexual abuse images and videos found online involve both boys and girls from 0-18 years old. In their assessment of reports to their tipline, the Canadian Centre for Child Protection found that children under 12 years old were depicted in 78% of the images and videos assessed by their team, and 63% of those children were under 8 years of age. Among that same material, they found that 80% of the children were girls, while 19% were boys.
Multiple images that depict the same child become a record of abuse and can be shared many times over, far beyond the instance of abuse, resulting in further trauma into adulthood.
Often times, CSAM victims are abused by someone they know — people these children should have been able to trust. These offenders have close access to the children they are abusing, using grooming tactics to normalize sexual contact and encourage secrecy.
The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) data from 2013 shows:

Those who seek to or are currently participating in the exploitation of children can connect on Internet networks and forums to sell, share, and trade material. These interactions are facilitated through several forms of internet technology, including websites, email, instant messaging/ICQ, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), newsgroups, bulletin boards, peer-to-peer networks, internet gaming sites, social networking sites, and anonymized networks.
The emergence of these online communities has also promoted communication between offenders, both normalizing their interest in children and desensitizing them to the physical and psychological damages inflicted on the children being exploited. These online communities often times provide a space to freely share interests, desires, and experiences abusing children, free of judgement and without fear of being caught.
Educate yourself on child abuse and the intersection with technology.
Stay active and engaged with your community to keep an eye out for signs of child abuse. Talk to your children about abuse and the unique risks on the internet.
They won’t be able to ask for help once something goes wrong and will need you to have your eyes open.

A 26-year-old male house help, Chinedu Obi stunned detectives at the Gender Unit of Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, last week when he confessed that he had been sleeping with his employer’s 10-year-old twin girls since 2019 after offering them N200.
He stated boldly that he dedicated his whole life to his job without having an opportunity to befriend other girls and that was why he pounced on the primary five twins.
The Imo state born house help was arrested on June 16, 2020 after the mother of the twins suspected foul play when she returned from the market and overheard the twins fighting over how to share the N200 he gave them after sex.
She told the police that after much pressure, her daughters confessed to her that the suspect who was her sales boy had sex with them on different occasions. She lamented that she treated the suspect as part of the family which was why he became close to her children.
“My name is Chinedu Obi. I am 26 years old from Umuaka in Imo state. Sometime in 2018, I relocated to Lagos in search of greener pasture. Luckily, I met one Calabar woman who owned a restaurant at Soluowu Street in Surulere area, Lagos.
“She employed me as a sales boy and the agreement was that she would pay me N400 everyday and feed me. I would resume work at 6 am everyday and close at 8pm.
“My whole life was dedicated to that job and I did not have the opportunity of making friends with any woman. I am a man with needs, that was why sometime in June last year, I decided to try my luck with my madam’s daughters.
“They used to come to the shop to stay after school and during this coronavirus period, they were always around. It all started sometime in June last year while they were in primary 5.
“I was so close to the family that the children were free with me and took me as their elder brother. One day, they came straight to the shop, and one of the twins, not minding that I was there, removed her school uniform and changed into another one.
“That was when the devil took over my senses. I had not had sex for so long, so I was moved. I waited for an opportunity when she was alone and told her that I would be giving her plenty of money if she would allow me to have sex with her.
“I was surprised that she agreed without making noise. We quickly did it in one corner after which I gave her two hundred naira. I was shocked when her twin sister came to me and pulled up her dress.
“She said that I should do the same thing because she also wanted her own money. I had no choice but to also have sex with her for fear that she would tell her mother. All I did was to always divide the money into two and gave them.
“I even wanted to stop when my madam started suspecting that I was having sex with her daughters. The twins started bleeding and I did not understand what was happening to them. I thought it was because of the sex and asked them to use tissue paper to clean the blood.
“My mother only gave birth to boys. When their mother noticed the blood, she was surprised because they were only ten years then. She confronted them but they kept quiet and she warned me to stop if that was the case.
“I denied it and the matter ended there. I actually stopped till the twins started throwing themselves at me again. Their mother would not give them money so they were always coming to me.
“I became very careful because I knew that they could get pregnant and I used to give them one drink to prevent pregnancy.”
“While were at it, the mother did not catch us because the twins were working together. I could only have sex with them in the shop and what we normally did was that one of them would be watching while we were doing it.
“As soon as we were done, they would switch and the money would be divided by them.
“During this pandemic, I normally did it early in the morning when their mother had gone to Oyingbo market or later in the evening when customers had stopped coming to the shop and my madam must have gone home to prepare food for her husband.
“She would leave the twins with me to help me clean up the place and that was when I would take advantage to have sex with both of them.”
“One day, my madam decided to go to Ijesha market with one of the twins, leaving behind the other one and her 7-year-old son. I then asked the boy to watch over the shop, that we were busy inside and we quickly did it.
“Unfortunately, when my madam came back, the boy told her that I was playing inside with his sister.
“But the other twin who knew what we were doing rushed in and started shouting that she wanted her own money but her twin sister refused and the noise attracted my madam’s attention.
“She started beating the twins to tell her what the argument was all about and they told her. This was how we got caught. I begged my madam to forgive me but she raised alarm which attracted the people around and they alerted the police.
“If I were in the shoes of my madam, I would feel very bad because if I found out that anyone was touching my daughter, I would deal with that person.
“My madam had forgiven me but the police were not ready to let me go. I can not marry the twins because they are still young. In the next eight years they will be 18, but I cannot wait that long. As soon as I am released, I will go and find a wife.”
Lagos state police command spokesman, DSP Bala Elkana who confirmed the incident said the suspect would soon be charged to court.

As young people move from early to late adolescence,
they develop both physically and psychologically, which
also includes their sexual development. During this
time, teens experience and explore different feelings
and behaviours as aspects of their sexual growth. They
may also begin dating which, while often short-lived,
plays an important role in their day-to-day lives and
ongoing development of how they see themselves and
their exploration of sexual identity (Furman, Ho, & Low,
2007; Furman & Schaffer, 2003; Meier & Allen, 2009).
Many young people may not become sexually active until
their late teenage years (Fisher etal., 2019); however,
exploring sexual feelings, including thinking and talking
about them, can occur much sooner. At this time,
teenagers receive different information from parents,
peers, social media and the internet about sex. This
can shape their attitudes about sex and can inuence
their own sexual behaviours (Marston & King, 2006).
How young people approach their sexual development
is personal, and so understanding their own sexuality
and making informed decisions about their behaviours
is essential for healthy sexual development into
adulthood (Frayser, 1994). Parents and schools can
play a pivotal role to enable a supportive environment
so that teenagers can explore their feelings and

behaviours in a respectful way for themselves and
towards each other (Albert, 2007; Department for
Education and Child Development, 2013; Dittus etal.,
This important period in young people’s sexual and
psychosocial development – and the supportive role
that parents and schools can play – is increasingly
recognised with the delivery of respectful relationships
education in schools and other child-focused settings. 1
