What happens if the battery of your key fob fails? Volvo Cars Mission Viejo's team have all the answers.

How to Unlock your Vehicle

Modern electronic key fobs provide greater functionality and comfort compared to traditional manual keys. However, they do require batteries that eventually wear out over time and need to be replaced. If your Volvo keyfob is working only intermittently, the battery could be dying and you will require replacement soon.

You can replace the Volvo key fob batteries by following a few easy steps. First, find a clean work surface to perform the process. Then, lay out all of the tools you'll need. Find the battery's hatch, and turn it open using a flathead, coin, or any other similar tool. Next, carefully pry the battery from its socket by lifting it up on the side closest to the key-ring loop. Be sure to use rubber gloves to protect the contacts or the clips.

Insert the new battery into the socket after the old one has been removed. Make sure the positive side of the battery is facing upwards and that all clips are secured. Then slide the cover back down and towards the key-ring loop until it becomes loose and then slides off. Then, take off the cover to reveal the key blade, which is hidden inside. This can be used to unlock your car from the driver's seat if you have lost or damaged your key fob.

How to Start Your Vehicle

Modern vehicles are equipped with key fobs that do more than just unlock and lock the doors. They can also be used for other useful functions like summoning and auto-parking the vehicle. In fact, the new Volvo XC60 can even remotely start your engine with its key fob buttons. But how exactly does it work?

First, find a clean, flat surface where you can lay out all the necessary items for this project. Then, lay the fob down on the surface with its Volvo logo facing upwards. Next, use a flathead screwdriver or coin or similar device to switch the battery hatch from the open position. Be careful not to touch the electronic contact surfaces using your tools. This could cause the fob to cease working properly.

Once the hatch is opened, slide the battery in its socket. Make sure that the positive (+ side) is facing up. After the clips are locked into place, replace your battery cover and reassemble the fob.

Pressing the unlock button one time will turn off the alarm and open the driver's door. Repeating the process will unlock all doors and the tailgate. The unlock button can also be used to open the windows during a hot day or to let fresh air in before climbing behind the wheel. If you're looking for more options, the key fob can also be used to activate the ERS system, which will begin the system for controlling your vehicle's temperature and then warm or cool it according to the desired temperature setting when the vehicle is in a parking spot.

How to change the battery

If your key fob isn't locking or unlocking your car as it used to then it's time to change the battery. The battery can be replaced with a flathead screwdriver pry bar made of plastic or other small tools. First find the small slot where the backup / emergency key fob made of steel used to reside. Inject the blade of a screwdriver or pry bar tool into the slot and gently open the back of the fob for the key. Once the fob has been opened then locate the CR2032 3V battery and take it off. Replace the battery and snap back to the fob.

Note: Older Volvos use a different battery one called the CR2025. CR2025 batteries are 7 10ths of a millimeter smaller than a CR2032 battery, so you must be careful with the placement of your replacement.
