Upgrades can boost the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades also boost bonuses like Crit chance and PvE Damage.

Components
Upgrade components can be added to trinkets, armor, and weapons in order to give them a boost in stats or to add an additional effect. These can be obtained by making crafts, buying from vendors, trading with other players or looting. Some upgrades have special cosmetic effects.
Upgrade components can be inserted into any equipment that has a slot to accommodate them. The item must have been at the very least upgraded to blue level for a component to be inserted. Unlike other mods, upgrade components can only be used once; they cannot be applied repeatedly or replaced with upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a specific kind of upgrade component that is that is used to upgrade non-amulet ascended or legendary equipment and some of the items that are not ascending back. Infusions and enrichments are recovered by salvaging ascended gear or completing an elite task in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.
An upgrade can include a suffix or prefix changing the name of the equipment to which it is applied (for examplethe "Canthan Armor Insignia" becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Some upgrades increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity, which allows players to create stronger versions of the equipment with the smallest amount of Upgrade Crystals than are required to reach the same level of upgrade through normal methods.
A boost upgrade is a way to modify the attack or defense properties of a weapon, or armor. These upgrades are available to be made from the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene and defeats the Crazed mechanic. They can also be dropped by enemies while upgrading other gear or by buying them from the cash store for 500 upgrade crystals per.
Each upgrade increases the likelihood that a higher tier version of an item will be dropped in the next reset. This gives the player some incentive to keep improving their equipment even if they're not sure of the extent to which it will improve after a future reset.
The process of upgrading an item could be costly and it's possible that the item will eventually become obsolete, or even break, when the upgrade is unsuccessful. Upgrade Crystals and assist powders are also destroyed when the upgrade fails. This is alleviated by the availability cash shop items to increase or even eliminate the possibility of failure, as well as some upgrades that offer an additional benefit when they are inserted into an item.
Glyphs
Glyphs can be used to upgrade the Paragon Board by placing them in sockets that are specifically designed for. Leveling

Each item level requires various components, and upgrade costs increase with each level.
Certain upgrades require an ingredient to be activated. This ingredient is obtained by completing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be found in the upgrade tab of a crafting table, or bought from NPCs. Each completed Upgrade Recipe earns a number of Technology Points. These points can be used for leveling up an item. Once enough points are earned, you will be eligible to claim the upgrade and also receive the bonuses.
When the player upgrades an item it is replaced with a different item of the same type. This means that the same armor piece will get a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item will also have its own set bonus. This could be a problem in that it could make the item more expensive, even if you don't need it.
Item upgrades can sometimes be rerolled, if the player has enough reroll tokens in order to do so. This causes the item to be exchanged for a new one, which will have an initial level and a completely different set of bonus bonuses. This can be useful however it should not be repeated often since it can be a waste of resources.
Certain upgrades can be rerolled multiple times, increasing their value and allows the player to modify their gear. Dolphin's Gift is a good example, since it grants buffs when the player repeatedly enters or exits the water. Requirements

If an item is not able to upgrade, the amount of accumulated experience in its growth bar is reset to zero. When an item is upgraded the upgrades are applied from the lowest to the highest.
