South Korea's democratic system is susceptible to populist impulses. It's still more stable than expected.

The country is in search of a new development paradigm. A Confucian culture that stresses respect for ancestors as well as gendered family relations continues influence society. But there are signs that a secularist culture is emerging.

Origins

In prehistoric times the ancestors of the modern Koreans were able to survive by hunting and gathering wild food. About 10,000 years ago, they began to cultivate millet, beans and other crops. They also raised livestock and made furs. They also established tribal states one after the other in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also developed a metallurgy business, making iron tools, including bronze. They also traded with other countries and introduced block and celadon printing to Japan along with art styles, a written language, and paper making.

Gojoseon was established in 2333 BCE on the southern peninsula. The state adopted Buddhism and adopted Chinese culture, including Confucian philosophy. At this time the inhabitants of Buyeo became part of Gojoseon. Gojoseon was a hierarchical society with a monarch and top officials were drawn from the landed aristocracy while the rest of the population were peasants. The state collected taxes from these citizens and often required them to fight in the army or work on projects of the government, like building fortifications.

At the end of this period the state of Baekje was established by Onjo who was a prince of Goguryeo and was the son of Jumong who was the founder of Goguryeo. The new kingdom expanded to the southwest region of the peninsula, and clashed with China's commandos and Goguryeo's in the region. Baekje incorporated aspects of Confucian thinking into its state beliefs and made the male-centric concept of filiopiety as a law in 1390 CE. Under the cover of filiopiety fathers were responsible to their families. They had to be obeyed by everyone and respected by their grandchildren and children.

Goryeo, a nation that was ruled from 918 to 1392 CE and gave the world the Hangul Alphabet based on the shapes that were created by the mouth when pronouncing. This significantly improved communication between people, and resulted in an explosion of the writing of Buddhist texts. Additionally, movable metal type printing was introduced, and woodblock printing was refined. In 1145 CE, the Samguk Sagi, or "History of the Three Kingdoms" was the first to be recorded.

Evolution in Korea

The Korean peninsula has been continuously inhabited since Neolithic times. The earliest evidence of human settlements is evident in the form graves lined with stone, with precious objects like amazonite jewelry being buried with the dead. Megalithic structures, known as dolmens and built of large stones in a single piece, are common in the country.

Gojoseon was the first political state to be recognized during the first half of the 1st millennium BCE. The peninsula was ruled by various states during the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCbetween 635 and 57 BC CE) including Baekje Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla. Additionally, 에볼루션게이밍 of the peninsula was ruled by the Balhae kingdom, which the majority of historians do not consider to be a valid Korean state.

After the Three Kingdoms arose the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period, also known as the Several States Period. Among them, Baekje was the most powerful of them all however, its dynasty ended by the fall of Goguryeo in 676 CE and left Baekje with its southern territories of Manchuria and the western region surrounding the Hwanghae Bay, while eastern Buyeo and the Gaya confederacy prospered for a period of time.

The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to cooperate in order to expand their territories. Silla, with the help of the Chinese, eventually conquered and unified the peninsula in 935.

As Korea is entering the post-crisis phase the development paradigm of the country is in flux. The people who are awed by the enormous costs of the old systems are in favor of a comprehensive plan for liberalization of capital, labor and product markets. On the other hand, people who support the old system try to preserve it through nationalist sentiments, as well as by inflating fears about potential job loss.

The academic and policy analysts remain starkly divided as to the extent to which these two developments are driving Koreas evolution towards a new model of economic governance. This article focuses on the five phases of Korea's evolution in terms of its political development that include democratic democracies that are not liberal (1945-60) democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877), democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and participatory democracy (2002). This article also highlights important factors that appear to be shaping these processes.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. The creationists have been successful in promoting their views among this group. A survey in 2009 found that nearly a third of respondents did not believe in the theory of evolution. Of the respondents, 41% believed that there was no scientific evidence to support the theory; 39% believed it was contrary to their religious beliefs; and 17 percent said they did not comprehend it. The level of doubt is similar to the United States where a similar percentage do not believe humans evolved from less advanced forms of life.

In the past, the anti-evolution campaign in Korea was primarily focused on teaching students and the introduction of Christ to them. A significant rise in interest in creation science came in the year 1980, following an all-day seminar that was held during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul that included Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the main speakers. The event was attended by a large number of church leaders, and scientists.

The event's success led to the formation of the Korea Association of Creation Research on January 31 in 1980. The inauguration meeting was widely reported in national newspapers, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo and was well-received by the public.

KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter, CREATION, where it covered its activities and published articles on the scientific evidence supporting creationism. It also translated a number of film strips and slides from ICR as well as a few books on creationism that were published outside of Korea. KACR members delivered lectures at universities and churches throughout the country.

A KACR success was observed at the KAIST University in Seoul. There, students were so interested in the idea of creationism that they raised enough money and support needed to build a small museum on campus featuring creationist fossil models and other exhibits.

In addition to its activities, KACR has published a bimonthly magazine, CREATION. This magazine covers topics in the creation science. It also hosted a series of lectures by ICR staff. It has also created branches in local offices that give seminars and talks to schoolchildren and community groups.

The evolution of South Korea

In the late nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century, Korea began to adopt an increasingly Westernized lifestyle. The traditional hanbok, or Korean dress, gave way to miniskirts and other fashion elements from abroad. Similar to the way traditional Korean music styles were replaced by contemporary jazz and rock and roll. In the period of this transition the samulnori, or masked dancing-dramas were very popular. These dramatic pieces were performed to the accompaniment of shaman drums and other instruments.

Korea's new development paradigm is being formed in the aftermath of the economic crisis. The new regime's main challenge is the balance between state-led economic policies as well as market-based ones. It also requires altering incentives, monitoring, or discipline schemes that have shaped the system prior to the crisis. These issues are covered in Chapters 3 and 4.

The Baekje was founded by Onjo, prince of Goguryeo and the third son of Jumong, Baekje was established jointly by the people who lived along the Hangang River, those from Buyeo and other areas and immigrants from northern China. In the 4th century, in the early part of, Baekje was a major regional power, and expanded its territory to Mahan in the north and Jeollanam-do in the south. The kingdom was in constant conflict with Goguryeo, and the Chinese commanders at the border.

The decline of Silla between the 8th and 9th centuries led to the rise of powerful local factions. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as the capital. He ruled a portion of the present-day Jeolla province as well as Chungcheong. Later, he relocated the capital to Wansanju. He was an adversary to Goguryeo.

His rule was however short-lived. After Gungye's defeat, he was overthrown by a powerful local leader, Wang Geon, who united Goryeo with Baekje and Silla in 935, Later Baekje was peacefully incorporated into Goryeo as an alternative state. Additionally, Wang Geon introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened a centralized ruling system. This marked the end to the Three Kingdoms Period. From then on, the Korean peninsula was ruled by the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla gradually grew into powerful states on the peninsula and in Manchuria.
