What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?
Modern car keys come with unique chips that are unique to each vehicle, in contrast to older keys. This prevents thieves from simply using the key to start the car.

They are usually bought from a dealer or cloned by a locksmith. The process of the manufacturer varies in that it involves turning the ignition key to the "on" position, without starting the car and then removing the key after the specified time.
Transponder Codes
When a transponder is questioned it transmits an encoded signal that is accompanied by a four-digit code. This signal, known as a SQUAWK Code, is used to identify aircraft on radar screens. It is also used to send an exact message to air traffic control in the event of an emergency or to alert air traffic controllers to changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is unable speak to the radio. They are essential to ensure safe flying.
Every aircraft has a transponder which responds to radar queries with an identifier code. This allows ATC to locate the aircraft in a busy radar screen. Transponders have several different modes that differ in how they respond to interrogation. Mode A transmits only the code and mode C provides data on altitude. Mode S transponders send more detailed information like callsigns and positions. This can be helpful when flying in crowded airspace.
The majority of aircraft have a small beige box that is located under the pilot's seat. This is the transponder and it is set to transmit the SQUAWK code when the airplane is activated by air traffic control. The transponder can be set in the 'ON' position, ALT position, or SBY (standby) position.
Air traffic control will typically instruct a pilot to "squawk the ident". This is a directive for the pilots to press their transponder's IDENT button. The button causes the aircraft to blink on the ATC's radar screens and allows them to easily distinguish your aircraft's location on the screen.
There are 63 distinct code blocks that can be assigned to an aircraft. However there are also reserved codes that prohibit the use of specific codes in areas with high traffic or in times of emergency. The block configuration of the discrete code is dependent on statistical analysis in order to minimize the chance of two aircrafts with the same SQUAWK code being in the same area.
A transponder keys has an exclusive chip inside that contains the ID code. When the security light of a car comes on, this means that the ID code inside the key doesn't match the one in the car's computer. The car's immobilizer will be disabled and it won't be able to start unless a different key is used. Pop-A-Lock recommends that customers buy a new transponder keys or have them cut by a professional locksmith.
PIN Codes
A PIN code is a series of numbers (usually 4 or 6 digits), which are used to gain access to an item, service, or system. For instance, a smart phone comes with a PIN code that the user sets when they purchase the device. They must enter it each time they wish to use it. PIN codes are used to safeguard ATM and POS transactions[1], secure access control (doors computers, cars),[2] and internet transactions.
Even though a longer PIN may appear to be more secure than a shorter one, it is possible to hack or guess a four-digit PIN. It is recommended that the PIN should be at least six digits long using the combination of numbers and letters, to give more security. PIN codes are often required by some OEMs to allow key programmers from aftermarket to ensure that they are not misused by unauthorised people to collect data from the modules.
VIN Numbers
VIN numbers can be used to identify vehicles and provide a wealth of information about them. VIN numbers are unique for each vehicle on earth and are not applicable to alien vehicles (or whatever). The 17 digits in the VIN code contain a combination of numbers and letters that can be decoded to reveal crucial details about your car or truck.
Modern cars are digital libraries that contain many details about their history and the specifications. A VIN number is the key to access this data and lets you find out everything from whether your vehicle has been in a recall to how many times it's been owned by different owners.
Each part of a VIN number contains a different piece of information. The first digit indicates the kind of car it is, for instance a passenger vehicle, pickup truck, or SUV. The second digit is the manufacturer. The third digit represents the assembly division of the vehicle. The fourth through eighth digits represent the model type, restraint system type, body type and codes for transmission and engine. The ninth digit is the check digit, which can prevent fraud by verifying that the VIN number isn't altered.
In North America, the 10th through 17th digits of the VIN code are called the Vehicle Identification Section, or VIS. The tenth and eleventh numbers indicate the year of manufacture. The eleventh digit is used to indicate the assembly plant that manufactured the vehicle. In car keys programmed through seventeenth numbers could contain additional information, such as options or features fitted in the vehicle.
The VIN code is a serial code with six digits that identify a car or truck. The final digit of the VIN code is also the check-digit. The rest of the numbers have been converted into numbers. For instance the first digit receives a value of eight; then every subsequent digit grows by one until it reaches nine at seventh digit, and then changes to two. Then, the entire VIN will be reverted back to its original format by multiplying each weight by 11. If the result is the identical to the check digit then the VIN will be valid.
Data Transfer

A key programer tool typically allows a technician, or an average person to program a brand new transponder for their vehicle. Connecting the tool to the OBD II connector on the vehicle and then using it to retrieve data from the programming is a straightforward process. The tool then recodes your transponder so that it matches the code stored in the software. This will allow you to use the key to start your vehicle.
During data transfer all errors will be stored into an error stack. This stack can be used for troubleshooting later. You can also set the process of data transfer to automatically restart loading processes that fail for the specified amount of times. This error storage could be useful if you want to monitor a particular application and prevent losing data records if they are not successfully reloaded.
