The item upgrade lets players increase the gear rating of an item up 700 points, and then add a final bonus. Items can be upgraded by having them in inventory and heading to the kiln.

Weapons

To upgrade your armor, head to any of the Great Fairy Fountains in the game. After you've completed the main side quest and have completed the corresponding fountain you'll be able to speak to any Great Fairy to open up the armor upgrade menu.
The amount of materials required to upgrade each piece of armor will vary. You'll need anywhere from three Red Chuchu jellies and 10 Rupees to upgrade your first armor piece, and anywhere between five Rubies or 10 Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horns to upgrade the next one. The Champion Leathers, for instance can be upgraded to a 5 defense rating, which will allow you to remain competitive in cold environments with a large number of adversaries.
