10 Myths Your Boss Is Spreading Regarding Item Upgrade
WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader
Upgrades will give you a boost in specific stats. Each upgrade increases the level of an item by 3. A random substat is also increased with each upgrade.
The upgraded gear is usually more valuable, unless the item has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like Eth Titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as valuable for the latter due to the need to roll a perfect version.
Recycle Points
The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by giving the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be applied to enchantments.
You can upgrade your gear at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended to visit the upgrader at least once every few weeks, to ensure that your equipment is up to date.
Upgrades can cost more based on the level of the item, however, they are always cheaper than purchasing new equipment. For example upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points, while purchasing the same item from another player will cost 105.
Valorstones
Upgrades are items that can be used to upgrade tools, armor, weapon and accessory upgrades. They can be bought by players through NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for a variety of currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade is purchased, it can be used on any weapon or tool with a button, which displays an image of the item at the next upgrade level in the event that the player has enough materials.

The cost of upgrading varies based on the slot for the item and the current level of the item. For upgrade item cost more than gloves, bracers or bracers. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones plus a specific number of crests. Some upgrades give a discount on the Flightstones. Once an item is upgraded to a certain degree it is able to be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower price.
Upgraders for items are available at many locations including the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs provide an upgrade discount and the chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrading increases as more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete certain achievements or quests.
Contrary to Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II, there is no upgrader for items available in the beginning of Icewind Dale. Instead the NPCs that can be used to upgrade require various methods that are both an improvement and a drawback.
In Season 3, the upgrade system was tweaked a bit, with some new features added. After the player has upgraded to a certain level of item for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same item level, will cost less. This applies regardless of whether the items are from a different set of gear.
The amount of Valorstones required for upgrades is reduced, and the discount is affixed to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed to upgrade is cut too, but it is only available when certain milestones are achieved.
Crests
When upgrading gear in WoW players have a few choices. They can use Flightstones which are a general upgrade currency available to all, or crests, which are more specialized and consumed during upgrades at specific levels of items. Crests are an essential part of the Dragonflight gear progression system that was introduced in 10.1, and come in 4 ranks.
The first thing to remember is that crests can only be spent on gear of a specific rank, and that each rank has different requirements for upgrading. The simplest and simplest upgrade is 15 crests. The most complex upgrade could require as much as 20 crests, depending on the kind of equipment that is being upgraded.
Players can earn crests through working through content that is of the appropriate level, which involves walking around and performing outdoor activities to get lower-tier gear, raids or dungeons of all difficulties for higher-tier items or Mythic+ dungeons or heroic raid bosses to obtain endgame gear. These crests are then exchanged with an upgrader for the item, such as Cuzolth or Vaskarn, in Valdrakken for the appropriate upgrade steps and routes.
Utilizing these new currencies isn't too difficult, but the system will introduce a few modifications to the upgrade process. For instance, when an item is at the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't need Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is designed to allow players to upgrade their equipment up to the highest ilvl possible on all their characters, instead of relying on seasonal loot.
Another important change is that crests only have one purpose, so it's important to make use of them in a responsible manner. It is best to use your Whelpling-rank Crests on the top-quality equipment that you can find and save Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next round of upgrades. This is particularly applicable to rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character which will only be able to take advantage of the discount for all accounts when all slots are filled with top-quality gear.
