Upgrades can boost the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. They also boost extra bonuses such as damage from PvE and crit chance.

Components

Infusions and enrichments are a particular type of upgrade component used for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment and some of the non-ascended back items. Infusions and enrichments can be recovered by salvaging gear from the ascended, or by completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.
An upgrade may have a prefix or suffix that alters the name of the equipment to which it is used (for examplefor example 'Canthan Armor Insignia is changed to Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost the Mark Level or Rarity of an item, allowing players to create stronger versions using less upgrade crystals than they need to reach the same level using standard methods.
A boost upgrade can change the attack or defence characteristics of the weapon or armor. After the player has completed the cutscene and defeated Crazed Mechanist These upgrades can be made at the Portative Forging Station. These upgrades can be purchased by purchasing them in the cash shop or collecting them from enemies when upgrading other gear.

Leveling

Every upgradeable item has an amount that determines its final upgraded stats. Upgraded items can be leveled until they reach a maximum level of ilvl 385. Each level of item requires various components, and upgrade costs increase with each level.
Some upgrades require a special ingredient to activate. This ingredient is obtained by making Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be purchased from NPCs or found on the upgrade tab of a crafting table. Each completed Upgrade Recipe earns a number of Technology Points. These points can be used for the upgrading of an item. When enough points have been earned you will be eligible to claim the upgrade and get its extra bonuses.
When the player upgrades an item, the base item is replaced with a different item of the same type. This means that the same armor piece will become the form of a shield or weapon when upgraded. The new item will have its own set bonus. This can be a downside since the item may be more expensive even if you do not require it.
Item upgrades can sometimes be rerolled if the player has enough reroll tokens to be able to do so. If an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied in order from lowest to highest. This means that the weapon that is upgraded gains a crit chance increase it will be applied before any attack damage increases. A new attribute called Slots has been added to the item's definition and the value is recomputed every time an upgrade is made.
The amount of resources needed to upgrade an item is determined on the rarity rating and the number of upgrade slots. The cost of upgrading equipment that is not premium is equal to its base value.
