Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an attempt to return to the classic sextet format, and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort with a harder edge. Learn Additional of Turn Back was a reflection of the growth of the band. Bobby Kimball's growing ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more precise, sharper, and less derivative than earlier performances.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live performance that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album just a few months after and then embarked on a tour around the world to support it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to find songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a double album titled Then & Now.
