Item upgrades are a way to increase the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade, it may increase the rarity of an item, or its Mark Level and boost additional stats.

Item Level
When an item is upgraded, its base stats increase in value. This value is the sum of all of an item's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). This is another aspect that could be altered by adding an option to upgrade the equipment without rerolling the affixes or choosing which stats to enhance. But as with base equipment, this would need to be carried out on a per-item basis and the interface for comparing items would not display all the possible stats either lost or gained at the same time.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player boosts the chance of finding items and the properties that are created by loot and the strength of these properties. However, it doesn't directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player a chance to upgrade their equipment in earlier waves, and is therefore more valuable in early game runs than later ones since most players prefer higher weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.
Luck can also increase the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading that increases with each level of the item and can be further enhanced by using an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.
Armor, shields and weapons can be made or spawn by using the Luck property, which has a default value of 40. item upgrades can be augmented by using golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) to add another 40 luck, or to increase an item's existing Luck up to 140.
Certain items, like the weapon with Hollow-infused components can also be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any skill that causes damage by five percent. These items can be bought from the shop, or they can be made using the correct ingredients.
Item Failure
Upgrades to items are costly and not every upgrade will be successful. However, there are cash shop items that allow players to increase their chance of success or stop them from losing an item in the event that the upgrade fails.
The success rate of an upgrade is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of successfully upgrading that item, and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The chance of success can only be increased as much, and the likelihood that an upgrade will fail can't be greater than 100%..
The Luck of an item can also affect the effectiveness of an upgrade. All items have an average success rate of 25% and each item with Luck increases that chance by an additional 5%.
It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the items in the inventory therefore enchantment glints and other effects may be obscured by the overlays.
