Evolution Korea

In the past the Korean scientific community was hesitant about engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credibility. Silence is no longer an alternative.

The STR has been campaigning to get rid of textbooks that discuss evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. This is just one aspect of the way in which the development paradigm has changed.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the change in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living creatures adapt to their environment, which could result in variations in genes or even whole genomes. These changes could over generations lead to the creation of new species. The predominant theory of evolution is known as natural selection, which explains the process through which individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more often than those with disadvantageous characteristics. This differential reproduction can eventually lead to the creation and evolution of new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has developed in both science as well as elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into a new species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist pupil who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that existing species change into other species in an orderly and predictable manner.

More recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living organisms develop traits that improve their chances of survival or ability to reproduce offspring. In time, genetic variation can cause a population acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. Such a shift in gene frequency is known as natural selection and it drives most evolutionary change. However other changes that are not genetic, such as the growth in muscle mass due to diet or exercise can't be considered examples of evolution because they are not passed on to future generations.

Creationists are using the argument that evolution is controversial, in spite of the fact that it has been proven valid by a multitude of scientific tests and it has stood the test of time. They claim that the concept should not be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their efforts to eliminate evolution from high school textbooks, including the removal of references to the evolutionary roots of humans as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur thought to be an ancestral bird's parent.

Why is Evolution Important to Humanity?

Evolution explains the origins and evolution of Earth and all living species. It is one of the fundamentals of biology and helps scientists understand how living things work and grow. Evolution also shows the connections between species. Scientists study evolution in order to better comprehend nature and make valuable discoveries like new medicines.

The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that can explain so much about the universe as well as life on earth and has been rigorously tested and verified over a long period of time. Many people, including some religious leaders, are in favor of the theory of evolution as a scientific fact. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology doesn't interfere with religious beliefs, as the theory is based on things, events and processes in the physical world.

In fact, many religious people have found ways to reconcile their beliefs with evolution. Certain Christians, for example, believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans have a common ancestry to other animals.

It is important that science educators advocate for the teaching evolution. In some countries around the world, anti-evolution sentiment is growing. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research is urging the elimination of textbook content about the evolution of horses and the Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.

While these are disturbing developments, it is important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics, and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

The vast majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. The reasons for this support are diverse. Certain scientists study evolution in order to discover practical solutions that can lead to the development of new medicines, while others are motivated by an interest in improving the quality of life for animals and plant species, usually to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, and still others have a deep religious belief in God and seek to know how the universe functions.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe the Bible is God's word and should be taken literally. Many creationists are Christians, but not all. Creationists generally fall into two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The YECs are perhaps the most well known form of creationist, and they believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is true, and that the universe and life on Earth began only recently.

OECs aren't as known However, their beliefs are as intense as the YECs. OECs believe that the universe and Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a lie.

Both forms of creationism deny that scientific principles such as natural selection and biogenesis can explain how life started on Earth. They assert that evolution is not possible because it requires miracles. The founders of modern scientific thought resisted miracles out of fear they could lose their credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation and call their view “theistic evolution.” This is sometimes also called "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the original species." In this theory, God creates the original species, and then allows them to evolve over time. In the end the evolutionary changes create new species that are similar to the original ones.

Others believe that God created the universe and all living things during a single event, referred to as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all the species of the beginning were created at the same time and then gradually evolved. They deny the notion of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating life cannot arise from non-living matter.

In general, the creationists are against teaching evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, certain academic institutions and scientists are more flexible and permit the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curriculum.

What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. The publishers of high school textbooks recently announced that they would eliminate references to evolution from their books. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, called the Archeopteryx. It is now focusing on removing snippets of Darwin's infamous finch research and on human evolution, too.

STR claims to have the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. Its goal is to weed out what it regards as the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of trainee biology teachers found that about half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The reasons aren't clear, but could include religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the United States.

에볼루션 has achieved a number of things in the past through seminars and lectures. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences that has an evolutionary perspective that has sparked interest among college students. In 1991 an academic and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university and it is taught until today.

On August 7 and 8 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
