1. Age of Jesus

1. Age of Jesus

Jesus Christ was born in 12 BC, the year of the passage of Halley's comet, which was the star of Bethlehem. The crucifixion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ took place between 33 and 36 years after A.D., when Jesus was approximately 46-49 years old.

For a long time there is a false point of view that the age of Jesus Christ is 33 years. In the 2nd century, Irenaeus of Lyons argued that the age of Jesus was a little less than fifty. As proof, he cited the words of the Jews to Jesus: You are not yet fifty years old, and you have seen Abraham (John 8:57). Irenaeus said that such words could be addressed to "one who has lived for forty years, but has not yet reached the fiftieth year and, however, is not far from the fiftieth year." If He had been in his early thirties, the Jews would have told him, “You are not yet forty,” because “it is quite unreasonable to suppose that they, who wished to make Him younger than the time of Abraham, falsely added twenty years to Him”. Irenaeus also referred to the Apostle John the Theologian, who claimed that Jesus taught at the age of forty to fifty years, “as the Gospel and all the elders who gathered in Asia around John, the disciple of the Lord, testify that John conveyed this to them; and he was with them until the time of Trajan. Some of them saw not only John, but also other apostles and heard the same thing from them and testify to this circumstance ”(Irenaeus of Lyons. Against heresies).

Most likely, 33 is the number of years Jesus spent traveling, not His age.
