“hot girl bummer,” blackbear’s first single since his fifth studio album, ANONYMOUS , was released alongside a low-budget music video directed by Gilbert Trejo , which blackbear and his best friend Cesar Silva creative directed. This was followed on November 21st, 2019 by a new,
I mean, it’s obviously a satire record, and the approach is basically like, ‘Fuck this.’ Maybe not ‘fuck you,’ but ‘fuck you’ to the situation, really. The whole idea is I’m out in Hollywood, I’m at a club, I’m in the corner, and this kind of sucks. Personally, I don’t drink. I’m drinking my Red Bull, so it’s even more boring for me. That’s kind of what the ‘fuck you’ is for. It’s just a funny look at what it’s like to go out nowadays and be around people in their twenties.
Prior to the release of an official Genius Verified video on 5 September 2019, blackbear confirmed via Twitter that he visited Genius HQ to discuss the song on August 20, 2019:
So I was on Instagram and I don’t know who made it up really, but I just kept seeing, all summer I kept seeing this hot girl summer thing and I was like, “okay, I got it, you know, whatever.” But for me, I’m more an introvert and I wasn’t having a hot girl summer, personally. I was having a hot girl bummer, so I wanted to make a song just for the people that weren’t really out there posing in their bikinis and not really out there so much, you know? And yeah, the day I wrote the song, I just wanted to talk about what I was seeing all year long, all summer long really to be specific. It’s just what I see. So, it’s just a matter of what I’m seeing, what I’m looking at.
Meg the Stallion song came out a couple of days after I actually recorded the song and I was like, “Oh, sick, this is sick.” I just thought it was cool but a lot of people don’t think it’s cool and I understand. I do understand, but at the same time this song has nothing to do with that movement or anything like that. I just kept seeing captions and I made a song about the captions I was seeing. So she obviously had a huge impact on all of culture, not just rap fans or anything like that because I guess I don’t listen to enough rap because I didn’t know too much about it. And then I’m just hoping she jumps on the song, like maybe she’d get on the remix.
Initially, blackbear posted snippets of this song on his Instagram story during late July 2019 , like usual for music in the works.
On August 13th, 2019, he announced the release date and shared this image to his Instagram story. He later tweeted the cover art on the Monday before release, August 19th.
In anticipation, he archived all of his posts on Instagram and directed his fans to #hotgirlbummer which trended on Twitter, peaking at #5 in the United States.
During the week ending March 14, 2020, “hot girl bummer” peaked at #13 on the Hot 100. It is blackbear’s first song to crack the top 20 on the chart.
blackbear apparently predicted this success according to his words in an interview with 97.1 AMP Radio:
Well, I went on tour, the dead 2 the world tour in North America. […] I think I noticed that we only had one “do re mi”: that tempo, whatever it was. […] I was like, “I wanna make another ‘do re mi’ […]” It became a “do re mi” 2.0 which is sick.
The girl on the cover art is the model Maddy Crum .
On January 29th, 2020, this track was certified platinum by the RIAA.
