3 July 2014 (Update) Horror from the Deep The dark book of a forgotten god. The Book of darkness is a book held in place of a shield, and is the God book aligned with Zaros. It can be purchased from Jossik for 5,000 coins after completion of the Horror from the Deep quest, and previously with The Dig Site quest, but after a recent update, you no longer need it. Ancient books must be made using all four torn Ancient pages which can be purchased from other players, or be obtained from Treasure Trails. Equipping a book of darkness allows the player to preach and perform ceremonies, such as blessing, last rites, and wedding rites, by operating it (none of which have any effect on the game itself, and are simply recited lines of text), costing 25% of the player's special attack energy. Lost books of darkness can be reclaimed by speaking to Jossik, complete with all pages that have been added, for no cost. Alternatively, for those who do not wish to travel to the lighthouse, Perdu will return them to players for 14,000 coins.

It is worth noting that the book's pages sound as if they were written recently since the book talks about followers of Zaros being oppressed however while when Zaros was in power he had great influence and many followers. Filling the Book of darkness with all pages currently costs coins. This article is about the God book. For the book used in 'In Aid of the Myreque', see Ancient book (In Aid of the Myreque). For the hymnal obtained upon completion of the The Temple at Senntisten quest, see Ancient Hymnal. The Ancient Book is a book held in the pocket slot, and is the God book aligned with Zaros. It can be purchased from Jossik for 5,000 coins after completion of the Horror From The Deep quest along with The Dig Site quest. Although, if a player has any other god books, (such as a Saradomin's Book of Wisdom) those books must be filled up with their pages before you can obtain any other type of book from Jossik. Ancient books must be made using all four torn Ancient pages which can be purchased from other players, obtained from treasure trails or by cremating a Vyrewatch.

Equipping an Ancient book allows the player to preach and perform ceremonies, such as blessing, last rites, and wedding rites by operating it (none of which have any effect on the game itself, and are simply recited lines of text). It is worth noting that the book's pages sound as if they were written recently, since the book talks about followers of Zaros being oppressed - while when Zaros was in power, he had great influence and many followers. It has the same inventory image as the Book of the Gods. Despite being a Zaros-aligned item, equipping this book offers no protection within the God Wars Dungeon. Lost Ancient books can be reclaimed at the Lighthouse by speaking to Jossik, or from a player-owned house bookcase, complete with all pages that have been added, for 100,000 coins. However, the book will lose all its remaining charges, requiring the player to add additional pages in order to activate the passive effect. After completion of One Piercing Note, if the book has all four pages, it can be used to create an Illuminated Ancient Book.

This requires 60 Crafting and 60 Prayer, and grants 10,000 Prayer and 10,000 Crafting experience (for the first time only). The ancient book is not consumed in the process. Filling the Ancient Book with all pages currently costs 1,390,318 coins. The ancient book can be activated like scrimshaw to provide a passive combat effect. The book can be recharged with any ancient page, giving 45 minutes of active time per page. This is shared, unchanged, with the illuminated book. The passive has a 5% chance per hit to activate. When it activates, icicles hit and surround the target, dealing 120-200% damage (PvP: 40-120%) and binding the target for 4 seconds. This is based on Nex's ice prison attack. The following text is transcluded from Transcript:Ancient Book. Ye faithful and loyal to the Great Lord, May ye together succeed in your deeds, Ye are now joined by the greatest power. Thy faith faltered, no power could save thee. Like the Great Lord, one day you shall rise again.

By day or night, in defeat or victory, The power of the Great Lord be with thee. Though your enemies wish to silence thee, Do not falter, defy them to the end. Power to the Great Lord! The followers of the Great Lord are few, But they are powerful and mighty. Follower of the Great Lord be relieved: One day your loyalty will be rewarded. Pray for the day that the Great Lord rises; It is that day thou shalt be rewarded. Oppressed thou art, but fear not: The day will come when the Great Lord rises. Fighting oppression is the wisest way, To prove your worth to the Great Lord. Power to the Great Lord! The Illuminated Ancient Book can be created after finishing One Piercing Note. To make this book, use an ancient book on the book stand in the Abbey of St. Elspeth Citharede and complete all the steps to make the illuminated version. The illuminated book has better stats than the original book in all applicable categories. If lost, it can be reclaimed from a player-owned house bookcase for 120,000.

However, the book will lose all its remaining charges, requiring the player to add additional pages in order to activate the passive effect. Unlike some Zaros-aligned items such as the Shard of Zaros, equipping this book will offer no protection within the God Wars Dungeon. The illuminated ancient book can be activated like a scrimshaw to provide a passive combat effect. The book can be recharged with Ancient page 1, Ancient page 2, Ancient page 3, or Ancient page 4, giving 45 minutes of active time per page. This is shared, unchanged, with the original book. This is based on Nex's ice prison attack. The beauty of the landscape makes it ideal for nature-lovers. Be it summer or winter, wild nature and its enchanting beauty will cast a spell on you. Experience moments of relaxation and tranquillity, and admire nature in all its grandeur. For the upgraded versions of god books, see Illuminated god books. For the books given out by God Emissaries, see Book of the Gods. God books are Prayer items held in the pocket slot.

Players first receive a damaged book after completion of Horror from the Deep, and must add four torn pages to make a complete god book, which requires 30 Prayer to equip. Once added, pages cannot be removed from the book. Following an update on 22 February 2016, god books and illuminated god books now have an effect that activates in combat, unique to each god. The Saradomin, Zamorak, Armadyl and Bandos god books provide protection in the God Wars Dungeon from their respective gods. The Guthix and Ancient god books do not provide this protection, as it would devalue the Shard of Zaros. During Horror from the Deep, players speak to Jossik about a rusty casket, who asks the player to read what the chest says. You can choose from the three main gods: Saradomin, Guthix, Zamorak. After you have completed one of the three books, you may purchase either the two you did not receive, or choose from the other three gods: Armadyl, Bandos, and Zaros (access to the Ancient book requires completion of The Dig Site).

For whichever god you choose, you will get a "damaged book" of that god. When wielded, this book provides +2 to Prayer. However, this is not the book's true potential; torn pages that are missing from your damaged book can be found and put back in to complete the book. Torn pages are a reward from completing Treasure Trails, cremating vyre corpses in the Columbarium, or by buying them from other players, either directly or via the Grand Exchange. If a player loses their god book, they can return to Jossik, who will have found it "on the shore" and give it back to the player for 100,000 coins, complete with pages that have been added. Alternatively, it can be reclaimed from a bookcase in a player-owned house for the same price. Main article: Illuminated god books After the quest One Piercing Note, all completed books can be illuminated, creating a copy with increased bonuses, and an additional +2 Prayer (to a total of +4). Illuminating a book requires 60 Prayer and Crafting, and gives 10,000 Prayer and Crafting the first time a book is illuminated (for a total of 60,000 experience to each skill for all six books).

Once illuminated, the books' requirement to wield changes to 40 Prayer, and now costs 120,000 coins to buy back if lost. God books and illuminated god books have a passive effect that can be activated or deactivated in combat, similar to scrimshaw, which is unique to each god. This effect needs to be charged and is done by using the corresponding god page on a complete god book, each page adding a 45 minute charge. The effects are unchanged for illuminated books. If the player loses the book, it will lose all its remaining charges, requiring the player to add additional pages in order to activate the passive effect. All effects have a 5% chance to occur with each hit, and have a 12 second cooldown after activating before it can activate again. They deal 60% fixed plus 40% randomly (20% fixed, 40% randomly in PvP combat) of the maximum damage numbers (this is incorporated into the ranges given). The damage dealt is a percentage of ability damage (weapon damage in legacy mode).

Damage boosts that are applied during damage calculation (for example, ultimate abilities, prayers, Void Knight equipment, and the Slayer helmet) do not affect the god book's special effect. Damage boosts applied after damage calculation (such as auras, scrimshaws, Keris, Darklight, and Balmung) will affect the god book's special effect. A tornado spins at the target's location dealing 4 hits of damage in 4 ticks, dealing 30-50%, 30-50%, 60-100%, and 60-100% damage for a total of 180-300% damage (PvP: 10-30%, 10-30%, 20-60%, 20-60%; total 60-180%). If the target moves from the tornado, the damage is halted. Based on Kree'arra's hard mode special attack. A shockwave hits the target, dealing 90-150% damage (PvP: 30-90%), reducing the target's Defence level by 5% + 5 and increasing its affinity values by 3 for 12 seconds. Based on General Graardor's ranged attack. The sword of edicts falls on the target, then burns and explodes. Deals an initial hit of 90-150%, 3 hits of 7.5-12.5%, and finally 37.5-62.5% (with the final hit being split in a 3x3 area, if there are multiple targets nearby), for a total of 150-250%.
