Photos by Yasuko FurukawaUnveiled earlier this month at Salon Satellite at Milan Design Week 2013, Canvas is a set of two-dimensional, lightweight furniture pieces made of wood, aluminum and stretched elastic canvas that can be hung flat on a wall.

The surface of each piece is printed with images of the furniture it represents, and once removed can be propped against a wall and used as actual seating. Canvas was designed by spatial designer Naoki Ono, founder of Tokyo-based YOY design studio. While the chairs might not be ideal for long periods of time, they really are ideal for cramped spaces requiring temporary seating. See related posts on Colossal about furniture. That's not exactly the logic guiding The Canvas Chair, a curious new offering from the MoMA Design Store. The seemingly two-dimensional, still-life painting of an armchair is in fact a trompe l'oeil that can be sat upon, by clothed people, no destruction required. Explains the MoMA catalog: "This off-the-wall optical feat is achieved by printing an image of a Victorian-style armchair onto elasticized fabric that is then stretched onto a frame designed to lean against a wall." Created by the Japanese design studio YOY, the chair is part of a line that includes a couch and stool. When product images first surfaced this spring, stretched canvas was hailed as a "well kept secret" in furniture design blogs. MoMA distribution, of course, is the first step to secret breaking: the armchair could be yours by late July for a cool $1,255. Think of it this way -- that's a fraction of what it costs to sit on a painting in a museum.Canvas, by YOY design studio, is a set of furniture disguised as 2D works of artAll those who regularly entertain guests in their homes will have surely encountered the problem of never having enough seating to accommodate everybody present.

There is no easy way around the problem, other than keeping a stock of extra chairs that can be retrieved and arranged as the need arises. But where to store these additional seats? How about hanging them on the wall as works of art ...Canvas is a set of two-dimensional chairs masquerading as works of art. Or prints of chairs masquerading as furniture, depending on your point of view. Each Canvas piece of furniture comprises a piece of elastic fabric with the texture of canvas. This is stretched over a frame made from wood and aluminum that follows the contours of the front-facing print of a chair. This means that Canvas can be hung from a wall like any other piece of art. When guests need somewhere to sit it can be taken down and leaned against a wall, allowing it to be used as a real chair. In practical terms it's unlikely to be comfortable enough for a long sitting session, but it certainly has a high novelty factor.Naoki Ono, founder of YOY design studio, presented Canvas at Salone Satellite during Milan Design Week 2013.

Canvas comes in three sizes: a stool, a one-person seat, and a two-person seat. This looks to be more of a proof-of-concept than anything else, with no prices listed or option to buy stated, but it's certainly a compelling and ingenious solution to a common problem. en> de> it> es> fr> Visitors interested in this product also looked at these products:TheMAG your daily dose of creativity: magazine about fashion, design, arts, trends and coolness CANVAS seating by YOY The first project that we present today could only come directly from the Salone Satellite in Milan. “CANVAS” is an original and interesting seating system created by designers Naoki Ono and Yuuki Yamamoto from Japanese studio YOY. We have to admit at first we didn’t focused on their stall, maybe due to hurry, or maybe because at first glance it seemed merely a stage set, a bizarre idea to replace real furniture. But fortunately, almost stepping to the next stand, we were caught by the congeniality of Naoki Ono, who invited us to try with him their “paintings”.

Pure comfort: what appeared to be a simple canvas leaning against a wall, is in reality an extraordinary seat, the result of research and careful planning between elastic fibers silhouettes and aluminum resistances. Different prints in black and white depicting baroque pieces of furniture, able to give life to a suggestive, pop and essential line that can meet every need. Three unique models: chair, armchair and the triumph of comfort, the two-seat sofa. With CANVAS art not only enters our homes, but is transformed into comfortable and functional design solutions to live.
