Each print size has its own rectangular shape, known as the aspect ratio. For example, an 8 x 10 print is proportionately taller and narrower than a 4 x 6 print. To make your image fit these different print shapes, photo labs usually enlarge the image slightly and crop out what doesn't fit. For the best results, you should crop your images to the same aspect ratio as the print size you are ordering. Or if you're using iPhoto for iOS and you want to print your full image, uncropped, choose Auto-Sized. Jan Etherington found the perfect answer on the net

My grandmother knitted her Christmas presents. Chunky jumpers, long scarves with matching gloves and pom-pom hats were piled under the tree. And while we may not have torn open her parcels with squeals of delight, we knew she'd made them herself, with love. Now, like most modern, working grandmothers, I'm more familiar with a keyboard than a knitting pattern. It's quick and convenient to shop online but, if I'm honest, the only thing about it that's personal is my credit card number. So what can a busy, 21st- century granny do, to show she cares?I tried looking for "grandchildren's gifts" online and the sites that came up were mostly American. T-shirts with "Grandma's sweetpea" on it; a personalised poem to a "Little Angel", or a book with a "real feelgood ending, starring your own precious grandkid".Nauseatingly cute and not me at all. Next, I typed in "personalised gifts". Ah, that was more like it. A huge choice of sites, many suggesting photo calendars.I have three grandchildren - two in England and one in Australia - and one thing I do have is lots of lovely, recent photographs.

What a great idea to pick the best of the year and make a calendar of family photos online. I selected 13 of my favourites and clicked on to www.photobox.co.uk, for no other reason than that it was near the top of the list.I decided on the A3 size for my calendar. "Add photos", was the next instruction. I couldn't get it to upload them. The screen was stubbornly silent. What else could I do?"If you're having difficulty, try our new Aurigma Image Uploader", the screen suggested, helpfully.I phoned their helpline and spoke to the ever-so-calm Sophia."Have you tried this?"And it still doesn't…?"No.Sophia, bless her, went off to ask the manager. She then confessed that it was the first day that the Aurigma Image Uploader was accessible via the website and there could be a few glitches. So it wasn't me after all. But it had been a traumatic morning and Sophia and I agreed to reconvene after lunch. When we started again - it worked! Waiting for the photos to upload, she told me she was married to a poet and I entertained her with the many wonderfully amusing sayings of each of my grandchildren.

Photos uploaded and we were away. The 12 "month" spaces appeared and I clicked a photo into each one, added a cover photo and caption for the front and that was it. All I had to do was wait for the finished calendars to arrive in the post. This was not just shopping - this was creative personal shopping. It had taken the best part of the day but the wonderful Sophia had made it work.My Photobox experience established my number one rule - only choose websites with a helpline. Those FAQs (frequently asked questions) some try to palm you off with are never the ones you want to ask.Dizzy with success, I decided to try something else. On www.yophoto.co.uk, I was immediately ordered to download its software, and it was decidedly snooty about my skills as a photographer: "The software will indicate if any of your photos are not up to the quality required." I didn't like its attitude. A friend told me that she and her brother had used this site for their parents' Golden Wedding album. But the arguments that accompanied the endless decisions about pictures, layout and choice of finish meant they are still not speaking three years later.

I moved on to www.bagsoflove.co.uk, where you can print your favourite photos on to smart bags and luggage. I also nearly ordered the red This Is Your Life album (just like Michael Aspel's) before remembering that my youngest granddaughter had yet to reach her first birthday.Next stop was www.kodakgallery.co.uk, where I found a warm welcome. I liked the "continue as a guest" facility, which allowed me to check out the site without immediately divulging all my personal details. I fancied a personalised Snowglobe and was invited to click on "browse". When I did, the photo files from my own computer appeared automatically and I chose one of my dogs. Unfortunately, it didn't fit the globe, so I put it on a baby T-shirt instead. What size is 86/92? Apparently, it's the length in centimetres - roughly, age one to two. Unnecessarily confusing, but the order was confirmed in 10 minutes. There was no stopping Cyber Granny now. Then my seven-year-old granddaughter phoned."I'm making things for Christmas, Nana.""
