It quickly became clear that many of the negative reviews were placed by folks who had not assembled the chair correctly and/or did not read the instructions.The ball *is* large enough for the chair base--and for any person in the 5' - 5' 11" size range recommended. But you need to pump it up until it's very hard, then use the chair for at least 48 hours, then 'top it off' with some more air.You are also not supposed to sit back against the 'back rest'--the instructions are very clear on this.
It isn't actually a back rest at all, it's more of a handle for using the chair for stretching exercises (exercises are included in the instructions.)If you do sit back against it, you are defeating the purpose of the chair, which is to align your spine as well as allow you to bounce and jiggle around a bit constantly to use calories, create unbalance/re-balance dynamics and put a smile on your face.My problem before I got the chair was pain in the back of my neck from sitting hunched over. Within 24 hours of using the Gaiam chair the pain was quite simply gone. And I had had the pain for *years*! It's gone and I think gone for good, or at least for as long as I bounce and smile and don't hunch over my keyboard as I used to do.The reviews complaining that the ball is hot to sit on in the summer do address a real concern. I solved it be buying a cloth cover for the ball--available for $29.00 here on Amazon Gaiam Balance Ball Chair Cover, or buy a hand-made cotton one as I did on eBay for the same price.
So, to synopsis: It's a great concept, beautifully executed. It's easy to assemble, looks pretty cool, is a conversation-starter at your office and--most importantly--does all it claims to do.
