First, a person's natural spine position is measured using sensors placed on the body; then it's time for the "virtual spine" treatment.The system comprises 78 pressure sensors embedded in a chair's back and seat which measure the person's weight distribution to map their spinal posture while sitting. An algorithm cross-checks this against their "ideal" spinal position, and sends them a text message or email with an illustration of what they're doing wrong – and instructions on how to correct it.The Monash Institute for Medical Engineering's Dr Stephen Wang, who is leading the project, said the chair was designed to "get to know you and your sitting behaviour".Still in the prototype stage – at the moment it's a bunch of spaghetti-string wires running between a chair and a computer – Dr Wang said the final version would be "beautifully designed and wireless", with multiple potential applications and forms.It could be embedded in office chairs, in airline seats, or in truck seats to help keep truckies on long journeys in good shape.
Add a little bit of robotics into the mix and its smarts could be used for tailored physiotherapy such as massage or applying heat to tense areas."The chair could automatically adjust for you based on your fatigue or your pressure load to make your body become more relaxed," Dr Wang said."This kind of physical support through advanced sensing results in more accurate, personalised individual support which is more effective [at treating pain]."Monash University Physiotherapy Professor Jenny Keating, who is also working on the project, said it can be difficult to fix poor posture without sustained feedback – something the smart chair technology can provide in real time.So what happened to scrapping chairs entirely in favour of standing desks or gym balls?The problem with these solutions, Dr Wang said, is that while many of us spend much of our day sitting at a desk, the need to practice good posture doesn't stop when we walk out the office door."You can say we tried to tackle this excessive sitting issue by standing up [at work], but it doesn't solve this problem," Dr Wang said."
