Marysville is an alpine township approximately 90 kms from Melbourne, The town was established as a stopping point on the Yarra Track, the horse drawn route to the Jordan goldfields in the Great Divide.  The township prospered, starting with a butcher’s shop and store in 1864. Timber cutters realised the potential of the region and large timber mills were built, logging the giant trees. By 1920’s, Marysville had become a tourist destination offering walking tracks to Steavenson Falls and scenic views of fern gullies and tall trees.  Many guest houses became established and it became popular as a honeymoon destination. Marysville is also the base township for Lake Mountain Ski Resort and during the snow season, the population of the town can double or even triple.  The main street houses a number of ski hire companies, shops and café’s to cater for the winter tourism boom.  During summer months, Marysville is cradled between to of Victoria’s best motorcycling roads, the Black Spur and The Reefton Spur and offers scenic walking trails as well as the Steavenson Falls.

On 7 February 2009, the Black Saturday bushfires destroyed most of the town, including 3000 accommodation properties, with many lives lost. The town has been rebuilt, and with a more modern feel, including the 101 room VIBE Hotel, many small hotels and cottages and the Visitor Information Centre.  In 2013, Marysville was proud to celebrate its 150th Anniversary. There is a Marysville Community Market every second and fourth Sunday of the month 9am to 1pm. Perfect for that weekend escape, why not stay in Marysville and enjoy all that it has to offer.  Visit our Yarra Valley Accommodation page to find accommodation that suits your need.
