When Ben and Ruth Muse moved their mail-order service from New York to Cape Cod in 1956, they moved first to Sherman Square in Hyannis. They remained there for four years before moving into 19th century three-story building in Yarmouthport that has been the home of Parnassus Book Service ever since.Known as Knowles General Store and built in the early 1800s, the building housed a general store for many years. In fact, during the early years of the book store, a number of customers and the curious would come in to inform us where the pickle barrel was located or where the candy counter was hidden. Our family have run a general book store selling new and old (often rare) books as well as issuing specialty catalogs on a variety of subjects: Americana, Latin America, Maritime, Art, the Orient and a variety of other subjects. Sarah took over management of the store when we inherited the store from our father, Ben Muse, in 2012. She'd been working there for twenty years prior to this, and like all of the Muse children grew up among its shelves. She's got a special passion for fine bindings and children's literature. She runs the store now with her brothers & co-owners, Bill and Eben, ably assisted by a third brother Charlie. Parnassus Book Service also recommends This is the place to go if you love books and it's a lousy day for the beach. An independent bookstore with all the smells of old books, and thousands of hard to find titles and authors. And don't forget the delightful sales staff, who are often as interesting as their fare. Thanks for generous words. I don't think there is every a really lousy day for the beach on the Cape, but we're always happy to welcome you in out of the rain (or snow). If you like book stores, this is the place to visit! Huge selection of titles. Easy to find on Rte. 6A in Yarmouth Port.

A great place to spend a rainy afternoon. The Parnassus Book Service is a charming old wooden house jammed with great finds waiting to be found. One unique aspect of this used book store is an exterior rack of shelves lined with books that you browse and buy on the honor system (put you money in the slot) when the store is closed. For book-loving Cape visitors, Parnassus... I love your image of a the Store as a treasure cave. We think it's a place where you find what you didn't know you were looking for. I stumbled upon Parnassus on finding my way to the Edward Gorey House. It is easy to find when on bike and I thought perhaps I can find a few books that interest me. Immediately, I was amazed by the amount of antiquarian books some going back to the 1800's. I was curious how many first editions they must have.Stacks and stacks and shelves and shelves and piles and piles of books. There's even a large outdoor bookcase to peruse when the store is closed. It's a big old building and there's dust and no Lemon Pledge scent.

But, if you love books, particularly offbeat, non-mainstream, culturally interesting and historical this place is worth a visit... Thanks for the great review. Sorry about the dust but we ran out of Pledge a few years ago ;). Remember to say hello next time you stop by. I go here at least once a week to see if they have any new books in or just to browse the old books that I'm saving up for. They have countless, signed, Edward Gorey books that I would just love to own. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and I always enjoy coming back. Thanks for stopping by. Its always great to see our regulars (especially in the cold winter days). What a great store this is. It's got that 'old book smell' that lets you know you are surrounded by history. The bookstore has some of your standard fiction, but also a lot of books on more local subjects (whaling, etc) that you'd probably have a hard time finding anywhere else. We could have spent hours browsing... Thanks for the kind words Ben.
