With the current renovation of the Filling Station Lofts rooftop pool (which will be back up and running for our Rooftop Unplugged on the 22nd of June), we’ve decided to take our unplugged sessions to new […]There’s a place in the mind of the innovator that is sacred. It’s a space where they can escape and jot down every possible anecdote they’ve come across; whether it be during that day or a few months back.

What runs through here is completely untouchable and protected by its counterpart. As artists and visionaries know, their work can often go unacknowledged. These creators have notoriety for being unappreciated and overlooked. Fortunately, every now and then, there appears a connoisseur who sends a shock to the creative world. One, in particular, is Peru native, Diego Orlandini. Creator of the Wynwood Coloring Book, Orlandini was struck by inspiration in a unique way. As many may know, the Wynwood Walls receive thousands of visitors every day – left in complete awe over the street art. What’s unfortunate is having these folks leave this incredible district with nothing but five rows of pictures in their phones covering only parts of the murals. Those who know this neighborhood well, know there is never going to be enough data on our phones to capture every single one of the masterpieces on these walls. So what better way to have this artwork as a keepsake than to put them in a black-and-white coloring book?

Activated by the inventive and manic work of over 40 world-class artists in Wynwood, Miami, Diego Orlandini set to work on this coloring book project all with one of his trusted best friends Robyn Baltuch, sitting in the street corners snapping pictures of the images they would later digitally convert to create their coloring book. This colorless sketchbook would be a way to represent these artists in a way they’ve never been recognized before. On November 2015, he and a team that later came together started grinding away [including the help of HGAB], dedicated to getting the book up and running. The Wynwood Coloring Book launched in April 2016 and two months later in June, they were completely sold out. “It has not been in any way an easy journey,” says Orlandini, “…but it has been worth it every step of the way.” With adult coloring books flying off bookstore shelves everywhere, Diego and his team want to give the public the opportunity to ignite the creativity in their minds and release their stress and anxiety in a very different way.

It gives us a few moments of tranquility in our busy days of “adulting” to just sit back and unleash our inner artist with the pieces we see and walk by every day. It has not been in any way an easy journey…but it has been worth it every step of the way.” With the Wynwood Coloring Book being such a success, Orlandini does not plan to stop here. Diego, along with his crew, has a new project in the works; this time benefitting a whole lot more than just stress. Aimful Coloring is a new game plan still getting on its feet for this 31-year old entrepreneur but it has great potential to be victorious. With every coloring book that’s sold, the money will go towards the purchase of a textbook for children in underdeveloped countries. “I don’t need anything. I just want to find a way to give back to the world. If I sell 1,000 books, that means 1,000 kids in those countries have a textbook to use in school. That’ll be more than enough for me.” I don’t need anything.

That’ll be more than enough for me.” The coloring book began with a kick-start campaign and is a self-funded project. With the support of the Wynwood community, there have been nearly 130 backers that have pledged over $5,000 to help bring this project to life. What lies ahead for this team? There are hopes to start another coloring book based on the artwork found in the streets  found throughout the United States! Here’s hoping us locals can not only savor the satisfaction of releasing our inner artist with the insane murals found in our neighborhood but to also revel in the ones from all over this country. The Wynwood Coloring Book has proven to be an outstanding and prosperous venture that is on the fast track to restoring our faith in humanity. Not only by helping us vent our frustrations out on a sketchbook but by also finding a way to give back to the world, if even in the smallest of ways. Bringing awareness to innovators and aspiring future innovators and artists, alike.
