Victorian Porch Furniture: Wicker & Wrought Iron Chairs The consummate outdoor furniture, popular for centuries around the world, wicker furniture has a long, rich history and is as popular today as it was in Victorian America. Wicker furniture, although hitting its peak of popularity in the early 1900s, was far from a modern innovation. The art of basket-weaving has existed for centuries, and wicker chairs date as far back as ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. In Rome, “wattling,” weaving sticks with willow branches, was used to create walls, roofs, and fishing nets. Wicker furniture is woven from willow, rattan, reed, cane, fiber, various grasses, or bamboo.
The process of harvesting willow branches and crafting chairs has a rich history—one that includes saving an entire region from starvation. In Austria in the 1800s, Count Hompesch, realizing the impoverished, rural peasants were nearing starvation, organized an effort to teach them advanced methods of furniture-making, instructing them to copy popular English designs and generating a wildly successful business. Wicker has a long and rich history in America. One of the only pieces of colonial furniture to come across the Atlantic on the Mayflower was a wicker cradle to rock Peregrine White. Growing and harvesting willow, for use in wicker furniture, was an incredibly important and profitable industry in America. Planting a willow holt was not easy, but once mature, the trees were steady producers for many years to come. To encourage farmers, the Department of Agriculture sent out pamphlets with information about how to grow and harvest willow. While essentially always a popular chair for everyday use, wicker experienced a meteoric rise to fashion in the Victorian era.
Wicker chairs and settees were on nearly every porch and veranda in the 1900s, and later became popular indoor furniture. It was lightweight, casual, breathable, and easy to clean, and exposure to rain and fog actually improved its durability. Without air conditioning, a warm night was spent outside in a wicker chair—ventilated, cool, and more comfortable than wood. It’s true beauty lies in its natural variations, being handmade by necessity… until the Lloyd Loom company successfully invented a method to mass-producing wicker furniture in the 1920s. Victorian Americans were almost as fascinated by exotic places as they were comfort, so the far-off feeling of rattan and wicker furniture made it ideal for hotel lobbies, boats, and trains. A popular wicker chair around 1900 was the Canton chair, an Oriental-inspired hourglass-shaped chair with a tall, fan-shaped back and footstool. Spring was “wicker perk-up time,” and women could redecorate entire rooms by giving their wicker chairs a fresh coat of paint.
The Victorian style left its mark on wicker chairs with curls and flourishes, and elements of Louis XV chairs. Folding chairs are as old as the chair itself. Always useful for their portability, folding chairs were used frequently by soldiers in the Civil War. Campaign furniture and safari chairs echo this style of leather or upholstery slung on a folding base. Wrought Iron and Cast Iron Furniture Around 1825, England and France were producing wrought iron garden furniture. Beautiful, able to be mass-produced, and durable, it was soon everywhere, including America. The furniture had a number of wild, floral motifs—grape clusters, ferns, lilies of the valley, and scrolls—and could be painted every year to prevent rust.
