Sure, it’s great if you can build a split-level deck with a gazebo and a water feature. But that’s not for everyone, and for people who rent their homes, that might not even be an option. So let’s keep it simple.
Anna Lisemeyer, the very creative mind behind In Honor of Design, is a renter. She has some simple patio decorating ideas that anyone can use to create an easygoing and inviting outdoor space. It’s her contribution to our Patio Style Challenge series. Take a look at the simple ways she gave her patio a makeover. All it took was some colorful throw pillows, an outdoor rug, a little spray paint and some good decorating ideas. We have a smaller fenced-in back yard with a flat cement patio. Since we rent our home, we also had the challenge of creating a new space without any permanent changes. We wanted to create a space that was conducive to entertaining and enjoying with friends, as well as relaxing with family. The set we were sent to style was the Hampton Bay Raynham Patio Seating Set, which really went along so well with what we were hoping to achieve with the space. Note, this particular set is no longer available, but the Hampton Bay Fenton Patio Seating Set offers a similar look.
I have to be honest, my husband Gabe is the main rockstar behind this patio makeover challenge. Not only does he have the better understanding of how to make plants and flowers live and thrive, but he also has a knack for working with wood. So I took care of the overall plan of action and layout and Gabe helped to execute all the details. It was really fun to tackle this project together! I started with adding textile colors in order to choose the rest of the color pattern for the furniture and floral details. The patio set came with the blue and white patterned outdoor pillows, so I added some yellow and aqua as accents. I love a good bohemian look and feel so I went for the full color circle and added in coral patterned outdoor rugs to create a space that felt easy to kick back and relax in. Gabe created some planter boxes that I painted white so we could start our own vegetable and herb garden. Lots of lettuce, cilantro, lemon thyme, basil, etc. It also added quite a good aroma to the space:)
I up-cycled the bar stools by adding a turquoise blue outdoor spray paint coat. This is an easy way to add more seating options while maintaining a modern look to the space. Add in a palm tree and potted canna lilies (we placed on this plant stand for height), and you have yourself a patio that is alive and ready to be enjoyed:) The bar table was built with a few shelves in order to have room for favorite beverages and stemware along with a place to house some potted plants. Gabe used standard southern pine wood with a Varathane stain in Provincial. (Add a good coat of semi-gloss spar varnish to prevent UV and water damage.) Take a look at the full bar table tutorial on my blog, In Honor of Design. Recently we had some friends over and used our yard space around our campfire spot so we moved the bar cart over to set up an alternate vibe for the get together. It is nice to have a piece we can move around for different occasions! To open up the yard space, I picked up some older seating at a local antique market, which I gave a new bright blue coat.
It immediately tied the seating set together for a fun hang out spot complete with a fire pit. We planted petunias and Bacopa in some coconut liners and iron baskets and hung them on fence hanger hooks we nailed into our wood posts. Gabe created a flower bed in the corner space of our yard to bring in some more color. Also, If you find a wire basket that is the same width in diameter as the seat of an outdoor wrought iron chair, you can place one inside the other as another way to bring in more life to a space! To change from day to evening entertaining we added some ceramic torches (available in store) on the coffee table, tiki torches around the patio, and some outdoor bulb strands of string lights along the fence. It lights up the yard and creates such a fun atmosphere. Photos by Chelsey Heidorn Photography & Kathryn McCrary Photography You can see more photos of this terrific patio makeover on Anna’s blog.
