I would not wash this item as it does not have a backing to prevent the wool from coming off the backing that it is woven into. It will just slip off the backing as others like this have done for me. In answer to the question about being waterproof, the answer is yes--with a caveat: If you drop a full glass of water directly on this mattress pad, your mattress may get slightly damp. If that happens, simply remove the pad, hang it out to dry, then blot the mattress with a towel and let it air dry.
