Stained exterior wood doors require frequent refinishing due to sun exposure, dampness and inclement weather. How often you need to refinish the door depends upon the quality of the original stain and varnish and if the outside door is fully exposed or partially protected from the weather. You can tell if your door needs refinishing if the varnish is dry, cracked, blistered or peeling -- conditions that allow moisture to penetrate the wood. Exposure to water and sunlight can cause wood to discolor and crack. Refinishing your wood door with quality stain every one to two years prevents weather damage and keeps your door looking like new. Remove the three hinge pins from the door by placing the flat screwdriver under the lip at the top of each pin and use the hammer to tap the bottom of the screwdriver handle. The pin will rise up out of the hinge. Follow this procedure for all three of the hinge pins. Remove the door from the hinges. It should easily slide out from the doorframe now that the hinge pins are no longer holding the door in place.

Set up two sawhorses on level ground and place a pad or folded cloth over the top of each sawhorse. The padding protects the wooden door from dents or other damage as you work on the door. Lay the door across the two sawhorses. Remove the door hinges, using a flat- or Phillips-head screwdriver, depending upon the screw type in the door’s hardware. Remove the door handle, lock and lock plate by removing the small setscrew at the bottom of the handle trim. Next you can remove the door handle trim and unscrew the other two screws that hold the handle in place. Carefully remove the entire handle from the door, and then unscrew the lock plate located on the side of the door. Two screws hold the lock plate in place. Remove any loose, blistered or peeling varnish with a paint scraper. Scrape with a gentle, light touch to prevent digs or gouges in the surface of the wood. Sand all the flat surfaces of the door using an electric sander with 80-grit sandpaper. This will remove the old varnish and stain.

Change the sandpaper in the sander to the 100-grit paper and sand the flat surfaces of the door again. Switch the sandpaper to the 120-grit sandpaper and sand the door again. This is the fine-grit sandpaper, which leaves a smooth surface on the door. Hand-sand the door moldings using a back-and-forth motion with the three sandpaper grits following the same steps as the flat surfaces. Use a tacky cloth to remove the dust from the door’s surface. Reinstall the hinges, hang the door back on the door frame and insert the hinge pins. Hanging the door before applying the stain prevents damage to the finish when putting the door back on the frame. Apply a coat of clear wood preservative with a paintbrush. Cover the entire surface of the door, beginning with the molding and edges of the door, then the flat surfaces. Brush on a coat of the wood stain, blending the edges of the stain or paint with light, overlapping brush strokes. Wipe away the excess. If you prefer the natural look of the wood, skip this step.

Allow the stain or paint to dry for 24 hours before applying the final coat. Apply a clear wood varnish to the door with a paintbrush if you used stain or left the wood natural. The varnish preserves the wood by repelling moisture. You can use your choice of semigloss or glossy varnish.
