In the early 1940s, when Charles Eames was working on MGM set designs, he and his wife, Ray, were experimenting with wood-molding techniques that would have profound effects on the design world. Their discoveries led to a commission from the US Navy to develop plywood splints, stretchers, and glider shells, molded under heat and pressure, that were used successfully in World War II. When the war was over, Charles and Ray applied the technology they had created to making affordable, high-quality chairs that could be mass-produced using dimensionally shaped surfaces instead of cushioned upholstery. When they found that plywood did not withstand the stresses that occurred where the chair seat and back met, they abandoned their original single-shell idea in favor of a chair that had separate molded-plywood panels for the back and seat.
The process eliminated the extraneous wood needed to connect the seat with the back, which reduced the weight and visual profile of the chair and established a basis for modern furniture design. The age rings in the wood are far apart, giving it a unique appearance. To create a worn effect, this technique employs a shaping tool that is run along edges and corners. This technique brings more depth to grain patterns by using a small brush with a very dark stain to put random short dark lines or curves on the surface.
Enhancing the grain pattern of underlying coats, this method uses sandpaper or wool to gently rub away some of the topcoat on edges, carvings and other areas. Kiaat (also known as Muninga or Mukwa) is indigenous to large swathes of Southern Africa, from Namibia and Angola in the West to Tanzania and Mozambique in the East. The blood red sap that oozes naturally from Kiaat trees is sometimes evident in the finished timber, but has also given rise to the local belief that the tree holds magical healing properties. It has been used for centuries by local tribes to treat a varie...ty of ailments including eye infections, ringworm and Malaria. When finished with a clear oil, Kiaat wood will take on a beautiful golden brown colour which is perfectly suited to both contemporary designs or a more traditional style. Recently we have added two more kiaat finishes to our range. We now have a water based semi-limewash finish which gives the wood a very raw, pale appearance (although it retains a high degree of resistance to staining). Alternatively, you can go dark with our new "chocolate" kiaat finish which also works perfectly well with modern or classic designs.

Pictured here, a beautiful revamp of one of our most popular dining table designs - the LIM table. Made exclusively from genuine solid wood, we've been able to perfect a style of end jointing that has enabled us to wrap the top panel around the edge of the table giving a contemporary, chunky style whilst still allowing the table top to shrink and expand with the seasons. This new technique has also been used to great effect on a 4.8...m reception counter top at the new spa facilities recently opened at Aquila Game Reserve.
