Wood stoves rely on a door seal to prevent air leaks and smoke from passing through the door. Also known as a door gasket, this seal resembles a thick rubber band cemented to a track on the inside of the door. If your stove is whistling while operating or puffing smoke out through the door, chances are that the seal needs to be replaced. It only takes a few minutes to replace this vital seal using furnace cement and a replacement seal. Pull the old seal out of the track using your fingers. If it's stubborn and won't come out all the way, pry it out with a screwdriver. Scrape and clean the old glue from the inside of the track using the screwdriver. If there are hard chunks of it, chip them out by tapping the screwdriver with a hammer.

Finish cleaning the dust and debris from the track with a small stiff brush. Stretch the new seal around the door and press it into place with your fingers. You will only be doing a dry fit to ensure that the seal works before adding the glue. Shut the door and close the handle. The door should fit tight to the stove with only a moderate amount of pressure. If it binds or is too tight on the hinge side, open the door, adjust the seal slightly with your fingers to remove any kinks or bulges. Shut the door, and adjust the seal until the door shuts snug but not too tight. If everything works, you have the right seal for your door. Pull off the seal. Cut the tip from a tube of furnace cement using a utility knife. Cut it off so that the hole will produce a bead of cement 1/4 inch in diameter. Run a bead of cement around the perimeter of the track. It's OK if it isn't perfect because the seal will cover it. Press the seal into the crack as you did before. Repeat Step 4 until the door closes snug.
