They appear to have been filmed unawares, through an aperture in the ceiling: we are looking through a blurred circular frame, a light fixture perhaps.

Sweet Haven is her first novel.view all 20 » A silent, but pivotal figure in the Philippine woodworking community, Benji Reyes’ original works of “functional sculptures” continue to inspire the sculptural style of Philippine contemporary furniture.

After earning academic units in architecture at the University of Santo Tomas (1977-80) and later in fine arts at the University of the Philippines (1982-84), Benji took on woodworking as his artistic vocation for the last 34 years. Formally trained in woodworking methods, Benji’s free-spirited approach to the craft had set him apart very early in his career. He challenged traditional approaches to material axiomatics in carpentry as he deliberately avoided the use of nails to fasten pieces of wood together. A prescient eye could easily discern Benji’s constant fascination with and absolute understanding of reclaimed wood by his mere act of choice and combinations of material; which strive to establish and maintain the work’s functionality with the harmonious integration of innovation in furniture making. The greatest appeal of Benji’s work is his predilection for the sculptural and malleable possibilities of wood, thus the emphasis of “softness in appearance” in their execution.

“Do it once, do it right,” is one of Benji’s many aesthetic virtues of well-crafted pieces that transform his oeuvre into unique art-pieces. On a more practical front, his artisanal touch has set his own standard and at once identifies an area for its production of beautiful objects very distinctively a BENJI REYES work. PREMIUM series, as these art-pieces are called, are vital and relevant today in the design and art scene, probably even more so celebrated than ever before. Benji lives quietly with his wife as a designer/woodworker in Antipolo, who continues to run the family shop. Rajah chair high back (premium line) Tsek Meyt - Chess set MY "WHAT IF" PROTOTYPE BOX. Fourteen times, it seems, for the 14 local artists who redesigned “the unbeatable Rocky” (an iconic horse figure) as part of the 40th anniversary of the international design giant Magis and its exclusive partner in the Philippines, Dimensione.Magis, an international design firm established in Italy in 1976, has earned global accolades for its desire to provide highly functional and technological products for the home. In celebration of the landmark twin anniversary, Dimensione has partnered with Secret Fresh, a designer toy store, to pool the efforts of 14 of its local artists to redesign “the unbeatable Rocky” – an “unbeatable, indestructible, rocking horse” originally designed by artist Marc Newson for Magis. Locally, Magis products are carried by Dimensione. All 14 artists — Renato Barja Jr., Iya Consorio, Egg Fiasco, Mark Andy Garcia, Jagnus Design Studio, Yeo Kaa, Luis Lorenzana, Galaxie Maria, Gene Paul Martin, Jason Montinola, Jason Moss, Christian Tamondong, Clairelynn Uy and JJ “Exld” Zamoranos — took liberties with Rocky and gave him 14 new identities.

The result was a Rocky that was as diverse as each artist’s style and technique. Tamondong imagined Rocky in a children’s tale, where “he saw plenty of fancy plants, flowers, and trees,” as painted on the figure. Jagnus Design Studio reinterpreted him as “Darkhorse,” made of clean, lightweight wood finished in black. Meanwhile, Moss’ playful piece, titled “Pacita, your horse got loose,” took its cue from the late artist Pacita Abad through its use of acrylic paints and yarn to embellish the rope fastened to the horse’s mouth. Barja, who called his piece “Dead horse,” depicted Rocky as the horse of the working class, utilizing, among others, resin, fiberglass, and false teeth. Meanwhile, Maria’s “Kandinsky Lily” asked the question — what would it be like if a horse imagined Kandinsky (an artist who painted horses)? Her piece is an “ingenious indulgence” of Kandinsky’s work. Uy, meanwhile, infused Rocky with an unexpected dose of pop culture, by painting a popular comic figure on his body.
