Six Wednesdays, April 5 to May 10, 2017  | 7:00 p.m. – 9:00  p.m. Church of the Saviour | 2537 Lee Road | The power of religion finds articulation in many forms: in Scripture and commentary, in sermons and worship services, in personal prayer, in celebrations and commemorations.  Poets, too, offer vehicles for capturing religion’s power and mystery and in compressed language that is rich in meter and metaphor.  In this six-week course, we will examine a selection of the poetry of four great poets and see the ways in which they give expression to the vitality and reach of religion while sometimes searching for a broader understanding of spirituality that is not limited to the conventional meanings of traditional religion. Rabbi Roger Klein, Ph.D. is the Associate Rabbi at The Temple-Tifereth Israel in Beachwood.  He is also Assistant Clinical Professor of Family Medicine at Case Western Reserve University and Adjunct Professor of Jewish Studies at the Cleveland College of Jewish Studies.

Rabbi Klein received his Ph.D. from The University of Chicago in Philosophy. He is a sought-after lecturer and has often given pre-concert lectures for The Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Chamber Music Society and CIM.  He has written articles, reviews and book chapters. A Retreat Workshop, Saturday | April 1, 2017 | 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. | $50 (plus $10 for Lunch) Church of the Gesu (McAuley Hall) |  2470 Miramar Blvd, | University Hts, OH | The retreat will listen to three friends from the 20th century offer their counsel to help us live spiritually deep lives in a VUCA world—volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world. Ample time will be available to listen to their counsel, reflect on its meaning to each participant and to develop a deliberate plan of action for continuing personal spiritual deepening. The day-long retreat will be an engaging time of exploration and explanation.  Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen and Martin Luther King will become friends in the Spirit with counsel for our challenging times.

Alan Kolp, Ph.D., is currently holder of the Baldwin-Wallace Chair in Faith and Life and Professor of Religion at Baldwin-Wallace University.  Dr. Kolp earned a B.A. from Guilford College, a B.D. from Harvard Divinity School and a Ph.D. from Harvard University.  He was a Fullbright Fellow in Germany.  He has been Visiting Fellow at U. of Birmingham and Kellogg College, Oxford U. in England as well as at The Graduate Theological Union (Berkeley).CEIRS READS: A Book Discussion Rev.
