Awards are given to members of RSS on different laudable projects, contributions to the academic world and the society at large both locally and internationally.




The different awards available are: Distinguished Service to Rural Life The purpose of the Distinguished Service to Rural Life Awards is to recognize a person, organization, or collective who has made an outstanding contribution to the enhancement of rural life, rural people, or rural policy. Awardees are individuals, organizations, or collectives whose activities exemplify the goals of the RSS. They may or may not be RSS members. This award is intended to recognize excellence in non-academic settings, such as a non-governmental organization, government agency, or private firm. The purpose of the Distinguished Rural Sociologist is to honor one or more RSS members who have made superior career contributions to the field of rural sociology through research, teaching, extension, public service, and/or public policy. Awards are based on overall professional accomplishments in rural sociology. The purpose of the Excellence in Research Award is to recognize RSS members who have made outstanding contributions to rural-oriented research and/or theory.




Note: The contributions of the awardee to substantive area of rural-oriented research and/or theory are important to us. The purpose of the Excellence in Instruction Award is to recognize outstanding rural-oriented teaching by RSS members at the graduate and/or undergraduate level.  Note:  Innovation in teaching and learning is emphasized. Innovation may relate to a particular course, thematic area, population of students or pedagogical approach or technique. Evidence of impact should be provided. Excellence in Extension and Public Outreach The purpose of the Excellence in Extension and Public Outreach Award is to honor RSS members, working at universities or colleges, who have made significant contributions to extension and public outreach.  This award is intended to recognize public service excellence in academic settings. Excellence centers on having made a significant impact on rural residents, rural life, and/or rural policy. Their specific programs or areas of outreach or extension are highlighted.




The purpose of the Certificate of Appreciation is to honor RSS members who have provided outstanding service to the Society beyond the call of duty in a singular area of effort. The specific effort highlighted are not associated with career accomplishments or service as an officer or committee chair in the Society. The Olaf Larson Graduate Student Paper Award The purpose of the Olaf Larson Graduate Student Paper Award is to enhance the involvement of graduate students in the RSS annual meeting, and to support their professional development. The awardees are current RSS members. The paper must be accepted for presentation at the RSS annual meeting in the year the award is made. The paper may be co- authored with another graduate student who is a RSS member, but not with a faculty member. The Fred Buttel Outstanding Scholarly Achievement Award 2017 (Article) The purpose of the Fred Buttel Outstanding Scholarly Achievement Award is to recognize outstanding scholarship in the form of a book or article (alternating years for each format) that demonstrates excellence in scholarly work in the same spirit as that exemplified by the late Fred Buttel.

According to the Bylaws, the Awards and Endowment Committee shall organize and implement the Society's efforts to recognize and honor those persons whose diverse efforts have enhanced the field of rural sociology and/or improved the conditions of rural people and places. The Society supports scholarship and practice to improve the quality of rural life through the distribution of funds from the Endowment.A variety of institutional scholarships are available to prospective and returning students.  When applying for a scholarship you must submit the FAFSA as soon as possible after October 1 for the upcoming year.Student must be a full-time student and have demonstrated academic achievement through high ACT/SAT score, class rank, and high school GPA. If awarded the student must maintain a certain GPA. These awards are not based on need.  (Awarded through Admissions Office) Completing the form will allow you to apply for both the Academic and Leadership Scholarships at the same time.




Student must be a full-time student and have demonstrated leadership achievement through high school and community involvement. If awarded the student must be active in Student Life at JWCC. (Awarded through Admissions Office) Student must be adult or minority student possessing strong academic skills, financial need or a special circumstance. Fine Arts- Music Scholarship.  Student must be involved with vocal or instrumental music.  The student must audition with the Music Department and participation in the Music program is required.  All awardees are determined by the music faculty.   (Awarded through the Music Department - 217-641-4999) Fine Arts- Visual Arts Scholarship.  Student must fulfill work requirements for the visual arts department.  The student must pass a portfolio review.  All awardees are determined by the visual arts faculty.  (Awarded through the Visual Arts Department - 217-641-4997)These awards are awarded by the athletic coaches of each respective sport. 




Participation in intercollegiate athletics at JWCC is expected. (Awarded through the Athletic Department - 217-641-4976) Student Support Services Scholarship.  Awards are based on qualifications for the Student Support Services program.  (Awarded through Student Support Services - 217-641-4343) JWCC Foundation Scholarship Information.  Most general and program scholarships from the Foundation are awarded in the spring and are used the following academic year.  Applications become available in late December from the Foundation Office. WIRC-CAA Scholarships - Western Illinois Regional Council - Community Action Agency for residents of Hancock, Henderson, McDonough and Warren Counties. Illinois Department of Public Health - Center for Rural Health -  The Center for Rural Health administers a number of scholarship programs for students in the health professions.
