GRÖNADAL rocking-chair combines a steel frame with rattan and ash, so it’s easy to get rocking in.For more than six decades, from the end of the Civil War until the late 1920s, wicker furniture could be found in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and porches across America. By 1930, however, wicker`s airy, imaginative (and sometimes downright eccentric) lines had fallen out of vogue, and homemakers rushed to replace it with something more modern. Some wicker furniture wound up in the attic, but much more ended up in the trash. Today, of course, the wicker pieces that escaped the junk heap can be found in pricey antiques stores, where they are snapped up quickly by collectors.

The last 20 years, Richard Saunders notes in the introduction to his new, revised edition of ``Wicker Furniture`` (Crown, 245 pages, $18.95 softbound), have seen a ``curious renaissance`` in the popularity of old wicker in America. Saunders, a California-based antiques restorer/appraiser, attributes the current vogue for wicker to several factors, including nostalgia, renewed appreciation for fine craftsmanship and the influence of wicker-loving interior designers. Whatever the reasons, handmade wicker has come into its own the second time around, with the finest examples of the wickerworker`s art now turning up in museums alongside other classic furniture styles.Saunders became aware of the burgeoning interest in old wicker about 15 years ago; his 1976 guide, ``Wicker,`` was one of the first books on the subject. The revised edition, subtitled ``A Guide to Restoring & Collecting,`` includes several new chapters on 1920s wicker, expanded information on Victorian-era wicker nursery furniture and accessories, a new list of wicker restorers throughout the country and a gorgeous eight-page color insert featuring photos of wonderful examples of wicker rarities-unusually ornate chairs, serpentine-back settees, even a wicker phonograph.

This helpful, authoritative book also includes a history of wicker, tips on dating wicker, detailed how-to information on restoring damaged pieces and advice on spotting fakes and reproductions. In addition to the color insert, the book contains hundreds of black and white photos and reprints of vintage advertisements for wicker furniture. In the mid-1920s, for example, Sears offered a wicker plant stand for $6.95(``price does not include ferns``), an upholstered rocker for $13.45 and a settee for $44.95.The late 19th and early 20th Centuries, considered to be the ``golden age`` of wicker, were also the glory years of the fishing tackle catalog. In those days, sporting goods stores were few and far between; for avid anglers, tackle catalogs served as a heaven-sent source of fishing rods, lures and assorted accessories. ``Great Fishing Tackle Catalogs of the Golden Age``(Lyons & Burford, 344 pages, $18.95 softbound) features reprints from dozens of vintage ``wish-books,`` most of them dating from the 1880s through the 1920s.

Among the delightfully nostalgic advertisements are pitches for folding canvas boats, mosquito-net headgear, rubber wading stockings, pocket flasks and, of course, hundreds of rods, reels and flies. Edited by Samuel Melner and Hermann Kessler, the book includes commentary by Sparse Grey Hackle.Elsewhere on the vintage fish front, Ben Apfelbaum, Eli Gottlieb and Steven J. Michaan`s ``Beneath the Ice`` (Dutton, 87 pages, $17.95 softbound)showcases nearly 200 colorful antique spearfishing decoys. Decorative as well as utilitarian, handcarved decoys such as this are currently in demand by folk art collectors. ``Beneath the Ice,`` which includes information on the history and background of the decoy and an interview with a contemporary Native American carver, is being published in conjunction with a traveling decoy exhibit from the Museum of American Folk Art in New York.A longtime icon of pop culture, the cowboy hero rides tall in the saddle once again in Robert Heide and John Gilman`s ``Box-Office Buckaroos``(Abbeville Press

, 207 pages, $19.95 softbound). Subtitled ``The Cowboy Hero from the Wild West Show to the Silver Screen,`` it`s an affectionate and entertaining look at cowboy lore and vintage cowboy collectibles from the 1920s through the 1950s, with hundreds of illustrations. And for matchbook collectors, Yosh Kashiwabara`s ``Matchbook Art`` (Chronicle Books, 120 pages, $16.95 softbound) features color photos of more than 1,000 matchbooks from the 1920s through the 1950s in a variety of categories. Kashiwabara, a California- based designer who has collected matchbooks for more than 30 years, has written a two-page introduction; the rest of the book is pictures.``From food and fashion to national parks and restaurants, matchbooks distill the trends and dreams of decades past,`` Kashiwabara writes. ``All together, the colorful images evoke memories and nostalgia for a bygone period of American culture.`` New Owner Demolishes O.j.
