Most homeowners these days choose some kind of prefinished siding and trim to weatherproof and add beauty to their homes instead of painted wood. That’s true whether the home is new construction or one built decades ago. There are many siding materials available as well a variety of styles and colors. When it comes to trim – the material used around doors, windows, soffits and fascia -- the choice of material is much smaller; most homeowners choose rolled aluminum or PVC, the same material from which vinyl siding is made. Color Selection Though many color options are available by special order from the makers of rolled aluminum trim material, most home centers stock only white, tan, gray or dark brown. Most makers of PVC siding make a host of colors, and if you want trim that’s exactly the same color of your siding, you’ll want to purchase the PVC trim from the same manufacturer.
Finish Rolled aluminum is available only in smooth finish. PVC trim is available in both smooth and wood grained. Properly installed, both look very good. Which finish to use is up to your own sense of style. Preformed Shape Many DIY siding and trim installers choose PVC trim because its available in preformed pieces to fit around doors, windows and other applications. Rolled aluminum comes as a long roll of thin aluminum, and each piece of trim needs to be custom measured, cut and bent to shape using a sheet metal brake. A skilled installer can cut and bend aluminum very quickly and accurately. A DIY-er should factor in his skills, available tools and the time available to do the job when deciding which material to use. Custom Fit When working with new construction, either material can be used efficiently since the windows, doors and other areas should be square, plumb and straight enough that premolded PVC will fit perfectly. When siding and trimming an older home, PVC may not work so well.
It’s possible to make slight cuts and alterations to the preformed material with snips or cutting tools to make it fit the not-so-square, -plumb or -straight areas frequently found in older buildings, but it’s hard to make it fit perfectly and look right with traditional tools. A rotary tool with cutting and shaping bits and grinding wheels can readily cut edges and angles where traditional tools won't. A skilled worker using aluminum stock can measure and custom fit pieces as needed to make the job look professional. Price The cost of the material to trim a house with aluminum is less than buying PVC trim pieces, but the cost of installation using aluminum is higher because of the increased labor. In most cases, the total cost for either is similar. The slim nature of the steel bodied Dynamic hinge, enables door opening widths to be maximised, without the need for add on profiles.
