Recovering the Classics is a crowdsourced collection of original covers for classic books in the public domain created by illustrators, typographers, and designers of all stripes. Its partners include The Creative Action Network, Harvard Book Store, Plympton's DailyLit, the White House, the New York Public Library, and the Digital Public Library of America.
There was an adult and youth division of the contest, and over 50 people submitted their cover designs. Prizes included your cover design on a classic book created by Books-A-Million's Espresso Book Machine, Books-A-Million gift cards, and Recovering the Classics posters. The three judges were David Blake, librarian and head of the Fiction Department at BPL; Gary Chapman, professor of painting and art at The University of Alabama at Birmingham; and Meredith Knight, studio programs coordinator at The Birmingham Museum of Art. "Alabama has amazing artists, and the judges had a very difficult decision narrowing down the winners," said Laura Gentry, chair of the Recovering the Classics Committee. "We are excited to share their re-imagined book covers for classic books." Birmingham Public Library has partnered with Books-A-Million to host a contest where Alabama artists of all ages and abilitiesThere will be a youth and adult division of the contest, and three judges will choose the winning cover designs.

Follow these guidelines laid out by the team at Recovering the Classics: - Depict the front cover of one of the listed titles, prominently displaying the books title (larger) and the author's - Be a vertically oriented, 12 inch by 18 inch RGB image at
a resolution of 300dpi (3600 pixels by 5400 pixels) that is a - Be bold, expressive and engaging - Be legible in black and white - Be a full bleed image (no margins or borders) - Keep a safe area of at least 1 inch on all sides (don't place text too close to the edge) - Include URLs or logos (small artist signatures are fine) - Use copyrighted images or images that don't belong to you. Many great classic books in the public domain have poorly designed or auto generated covers, and we often judge a book by its cover. With the popularity of these redesigned covers, Recovering the Classics launched the 50x50 campaign to bring this exhibit of amazing recovered classics posters to libraries and schools everywhere by hosting an exhibit in each of the 50 states, and if possible, have people create their own covers. The power of the photo-sharing app was an eye-opener for Birmingham, AL-based designer William McLure, who was living in an apartment that lacked the good bones to truly showcase his aesthetic.
“I realized that I needed to move into a space that’s amazing,” he says, “one where I could create these beautiful interiors and switch it up.” He found a one-bedroom apartment in a 1920s house with plenty of potential. “I saw the bones and the details that a lot of landlords can’t see,” he says. “I knew instantly that all that was going to get ripped out. I didn’t tell them that because usually that’s a red flag for any landlord.” William ripped out the carpet (sneaking pieces out to the trash late at night) and painted the wood floors that had been beneath, as well as the kitchen’s linoleum. “I striped the living room and kitchen floors,” he says. “That’s an easy way to instantly jazz up your space.” The living room was designed as a multipurpose space that could serve as a painting studio, a gallery for his artwork, and a spot for entertaining close friends. He used a neutral palette of brown, white, and cream to let the graphic artwork shine and accentuate the airy feel of the light-filled space.
